Assignment Information

This page will give a complete listing of the reading and homework assignments that you are required to do. There is also a listing of the Exam schedule for the semester. The homework will be done with WeBWorK. This is an electronic homework system that is graded automatically on the due date. The grades of students taking the course were highly correlated with the scores on the Web Work homework assignments, so it is very important that you take this homework seriously (worth 20% of the lecture grade). If you find an error in one of the problems, then please email Joseph Mahaffy. On each problem of each assignment, you are allowed 10 tries to get the correct answer. Week 15: The Final is Mon. Dec 10, 13:00-15:00. The Exam section below gives more information on the final. There is a Final from F09 (with Solutions) and a Final from S05 (with Solutions). This week starts the definite integral. The lecture material for the last week can be found in the notes for Definite Integrals. PDF lectures notes for Definite Integrals (4-Panel) are available. Week 14: You will have Lab Exam 3: Mon. Dec. 3. There is a review sheet for the lab portion of the exam with solutions for this review sheet available. In addition, there is a special Maple Help page for the review sheet. The computer on which you will individually take the Lab Portion of the Exam is available. The lecture material for the last week can be found in the notes for Definite Integrals. PDF lectures notes for Definite Integrals (4-Panel) are available. Lab Notes: If you own a Laptop, then you can receive a licensed copy of Maple by coming to my office with your laptop.

Class Rankings: A hyperlink is provided with information on your class ranking along with all your grades on exams, labs, and Web Work problems. If you find any errors, notify me immediately. There is a code sheet, and through BlackBoard you can find your number to find your code name.

Tutors: There is departmental tutoring, but details have yet to be established for this semester. The Math Office has a list of private tutors. I would highly recommend that you use my office hours and the ones posted for our lab assistant.

Exam Information

The Exam schedule is given below. There will be 3 Exams and a Final this semester. The exams will have 2 parts: 1. Exam over lecture material in the lecture room SSE 1401. 2. Lab Practical Exam over techniques learned in Lab, included in the Lab Exam will be one question counting toward the lecture Exam.

The Final is Mon. Dec 10, 13:00-15:00. The Exam section below gives more information on the final. There is a Final from F09 (with Solutions) and a Final from S05 (with Solutions). There will be 8-10 questions similar to the ones that you have done in WeBWorK and on previous exams. Note that you will only be able to use a Scientific Calculator, so you might want to buy one and practice now (if you haven't already done so). Examples of acceptable calculators are Ativa AT-30, Casio Scientific Calculator, HP 33S, Sharp EL501, and TI-30X. In addition, you can have three 3x5 notecards (both sides).

The final will consist of 8-10 questions. Below is a list of categories of questions to provide some guidance:

Note: The computer lab in GMCS 425 is open for most of the hours 9-10 M-Th, 9-4:00 F, and 9-4:00 Sat. Please let me know if you have any problems accessing this lab.

Course Drop Deadlines: The administration has a strict policy that all drops must occur in the first 3 weeks of classes. The drop deadline is September 10.

Week 1: You need to familiarize yourself with this website so that you will know where to get the appropriate information for doing well in this course. (Students using my notes from Math 121 will already know how to navigate this webpage and should help those students unfamiliar with this course style.) There is a general information page that should help you navigate this website if you are not comfortable with the web. Students are entitled to a free account on rohan for receiving email and accessing many of the University computer facilities. We highly recommend getting one of these accounts. (Email will be very important for communicating with your lab partners and asking questions to your instructors.) More information on this is provided at the SDSU computer facilities website.

Reading assignment: Read all sections in the introduction to be familiar with the course policies and what is expected of you. (You may want to read the CSU and SDSU College of Sciences policy statement also.) After an introduction to what the Math 122 course will be covering, we will return to some of the differentiation material not covered in Math 121 last semester. There is a Math 121 final that is available for those unfamiliar with this web-based course to see what material you are supposed to know going into Math 122. Since many of you had a different instructor, this final may seem to cover substantially different material. However, you should enter Math 122 with the basics in Differential Calculus. The primary difference between the course that we teach and the other Math 121 sections is the emphasis on connecting the Mathematics to the Biology, which means that you will find most of the problems in class and on exams are word problems. You should begin by reading the Introduction section in the lecture notes. You may want to review the course notes for Math 121.

There is a syllabus available for the semester though the lecture material and exam timing will likely be modified as the semester progresses, since this is an old syllabus. Your best version of a syllabus is the Introduction (4-Panel), used in lecture on the first day.

This week we examine the section on the Discrete Logistic Growth Models. PDF lectures notes for the Introduction (4-Panel), and Discrete Logistic Growth Models (4-Panel), and Discrete Dynamical Systems Models (4-Panel) are available. You should be working the WeBWorKproblems that are assigned. There is a set of problems that review differentiation (Set Bioc2revdiff), which are due Wed. Sept. 5 at 4 AM, and a set from the Discrete Logistic Growth Models (Set Bioc2logistic), which are due Mon. Sept.10 at 4 AM. Discrete Logistic Growth Models homework are available (with complete solutions (logistic)). Information on logging into WebWork is given by this hyperlink. The set of problems that review differentiation should be worked with nothing more than a scientific calculator and paper just as you would on a lecture exam. If you need help, such as Wolfram Alpha, on many of these problems, then you are NOT prepared for this course.

You will begin your Computer Lab on WeBWorK answering a question about techniques in the lab, then putting numerical answers and formulae to your specific lab. Each student will have an individual lab to work in WeBWorK, but you will work as pairs to learn the techniques and for the written part of the Lab, where you submit graphs and short paragraphs asked in the lab. For more details, read the first Help page to the current Lab that you are assigned. Your first Computer Lab is due by 4 PM on Saturday, Sept. 8 in GMCS 425 (the labeled box). Most students have had Math 121 and know the primary guidelines for the Computer Lab report. If you have not had Math 121 at SDSU, then you may want to come to my office hours to discuss what is expected on the lab report. There are posted guidelines on the Web with our expectations. We do have a policy of dropping the lowest score for labs reports.

Week 2: This week continue the material on the Discrete Logistic Growth Models and More Applications of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems. Start reading the material on Optimization. PDF lectures notes for the Discrete Logistic Growth Models (4-Panel), Discrete Dynamical Systems Models (4-Panel), and Optimization (4-Panel) are available. You should be working the WeBWorK problems from the Discrete Logistic Growth Models (Set Bioc2logistic), which are due Mon. Sept.10 at 4 AM.  Week 3: This week continues the material on Optimization and begins the material on Trignometry. There has been a substantial revision to the chapter on Trigonometric Functions, so you can obtain a revised copy by the hyperlink. Week 8: The exam scores were a little low, so for this exam, you are allowed to rework the exam (by yourself) and turn in corrections for 50% of the missed points.
