I am interested in artificial ecologies that are generalizations
of probabilistic cellular automata involving non-synchronous
state-dependent updating. I have been investigating the evolution of
genes responsible for spatial displacements (direction and speed of
movement) and vision (accuracy and visual range) in prey-predator models.
Without the inclusion of metapopulations (patch populations with a small
diffusion between them) these models evolve producing highly efficient
individuals. This creates in turn large oscillations in the population sizes
that eventually lead to extinction. This evidence tends to stress the
paramount importance of the spatial extent to obtain robust
ecologies.
