Thank you for visiting my website. I’m an Anthropologist/Social Science Researcher who retired from academia in 2002 (Emeritus Professor, San Diego State University). I live in Grabouw in the Western Cape in South Africa not far from Cape Town with my wife Cheryl. Rumours that we have become farmers are exaggerated, but we do have a few fruit trees.

My academic experience also includes time spent at various universities (Cape Town, Witwatersrand, Zimbabwe, Honolulu and Namibia). Since retiring, I have been an Honorary Research Associate at the University of Cape Town, a Research Associate with the Southern African Migration Project (SAMP) and the Urban Food Security Urban Network (AFSUN).

My research interests include migration and related topics such as food security, brain drain and xenophobia. My research experience includes methodology, sampling, data analysis (spss), survey design and fieldworker training. I have a long term interest in Namibia having done my Ph.D. fieldwork there in 1967-1968. Since 1988, I have worked on development related projects in Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. I have extensive experience doing data analysis with spss and have conducted training workshops on the software.

Below are three of my favourite published works (*) followed by some recent publications.
