Founded in 1942, the Institute on World Affairs (IWA), has long served as an academic and public policy forum for the analysis and discussion of international relations. When established, the nation and the world found themselves engulfed in World War II; today, after the events of September 11, 2001, the nation and the world find themselves engulfed in a different struggle, one with vast consequences for American foreign policy and international relations. In both instances, public universities such as San Diego State University have contributed to the public dialogue between leaders from home and abroad and students, faculty and the community of San Diego at large.
The Institute on World Affairs now bears the name of Ambassador Charles W. Hostler, former U.S. Ambassador to Bahrain, who has served his country with distinction and continues to do so through his ongoing diplomatic efforts, as well as through his generous support of the IWA.
The IWA revolves around three principal activities: a class held each spring semester, a community discussion with experts, leaders, and ambassadors who come to SDSU to share their insights, and a commitment to the students and citizens of San Diego to help them better understand the ever-changing nature of world affairs. The Institute remains an integral part of SDSU’s Political Science Department and College of Arts & Letters. We have carried out our mission through its Political Science 393 classes, special lectures, panel discussions, receptions, lunches and dinners. In effect, these programs, nearly three generations of SDSU and community members have interacted with a vast array of authorities on world affairs, ranging from Nobel Laureates to former heads of state. As the 21st century unfolds, the Institute on World Affairs of SDSU will continue to be dedicated to the principle that freedom can only flourish in a climate of free inquiry and public dialogue.
