Ambassador Suleymanov Visits SDSU
His excellency, Elin Suleymanov, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United States, was invited to speak at the Ambassador Charles Hostler Lecture Series on World Affairs on April 22, 2013. This lecture series, which has been held each year since 1942, features important scholars and government officials from all over the world to speak on major national, regional, and global issues and recommendations for dialogues and peaceful solutions.
Ambassador Suleymanov is frequently invited to speak at universities throughout the United States. On this occasion, his topic was the Changing Political and Economic Dynamics in the Caucasus Region. He gave an eloquent presentation on the historical and current development of the Caucusus Region, where Azerbaijan is located, along with a number of other countries. He noted the strategic importance of this region as the modern silk road and the crossroad between Asia and Europe. Insightfully, he addressed a number of issues affecting peace and development in the region. At the same time, he provided an optimistic view of the future of this region as it emerges from relative isolation during the Soviet era to fuller engagement in the global economy.
In the question-and-answer period, followed by a private dinner, the Ambassador spoke further about the opportunities for American engagement in Azerbaijan and the Caucasus region.
