Required Courses in the Pre Major

All students wishing to major in Business are admitted to SDSU as pre-business (Business Administration) majors, whether they are freshmen, lower-division transfers, or upper division transfers. Students usually spend the first half of their college work (whether at SDSU or at another college) working on the pre-business requirements.

Students are eligible to declare an upper division major when they meet the impaction requirements.

The impaction requirements are:

  1. Complete the following 9 (8 for Accounting majors) Preparation for the Major classes with a C or better in each:

Financial Accounting (ACCTG 201)  [formerly ACCT230]
Managerial Accounting (ACCTG 202)  [formerly ACCT 220]
Principles of Information Systems (IDS 180)
Business Communications (IDS 290)  [not required for Accounting majors]
    Macroeconomics (ECON 101)
    Microeconomics (ECON 102)
    Business Law (FIN 240)
    Statistics (STAT 119)
Business Calculus (MATH 120) or Calculus (MATH 150)

Equivalent courses at other colleges may be substituted for the SDSU classes listed. You can use SDSU's Transfer Admission Planner to see if the classes you took at another school are equivalent to (articulated with) SDSU courses. If you do not find your course or school listed there, please consult the Business Advising Center.

  2. Complete at least 60 units of college-level work. There are sample lower division programs available to show you how you can combine lower division General Education classes and Preparation for the Major classes to meet the 60-unit requirement.

  3. Have a 2.9 GPA in all college work completed. *
[Note: a 2.9 SDSU GPA is no longer required.]

If you meet the requirements to declare an upper division major you should bring a copy of your SDSU Evaluation to the Business Advising Center (BA 448, phone 619-594-5828) during a specified filing period.

* Students who meet all other requirements but have less than a 2.9 GPA can ask to be placed on the waiting list. If there is space in the program after all eligible students have been accommodated, then students will be admitted from the waiting list in GPA order. Contact the Business Advising Center for more information.

The following upper division majors are available:

Accounting
Finance
Financial Services
Information Systems
Management
Marketing
Real Estate

There are also lists of courses required in each upper division major and sample programs for each upper division major available.

International Business is a joint major between the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Business Administration. Requirements for declaring a major in International Business differ from those for Business. Consult the International Business Office for more information.
