Declaration FAQ

1. When should I declare?
If you are ready to declare your upper division major for Spring 2012, you may declare beginning November 21. You must have at least a 2.9 overall GPA, and have completed the nine major prep courses. If your gpa is not a 2.9 you may request to be placed on the WAITLIST.

2. What if I am still taking some of the prep courses in Fall?
If you are taking a major prep course at SDSU or another school in Fall semester, you may declare as long as you can show you are currently enrolled in the course. In order to remain a declared major, your grade must be posted at SDSU or provided to the BAC by January 12th.

3. What if I don’t have a 2.9 GPA?
If you have completed all the major prep courses, but your overall GPA is below 2.9 you may request to be placed on the WAITLIST. There is a new WAITLIST each semester. We anticipate we may have spaces available for Spring 2012, so we encourage you to waitlist if you don't have the 2.9.

4. Why is my GPA on my Degree Evaluation different from the one on WebGrades and which one do you use?
Usually the two GPAs are the same, but the two computers use slightly different rules to calculate your GPA. If you have questions about discrepancies between the GPA on your evaluation and on your transcript, please consult the Office of Advising and Evaluations for more information.

5. Once I have declared my major, how do I know what to take?
When you come in to declare upper division, we recommend that you print out a copy of the courses required for your major and the sample programs for that major. These advising aids are available on our website and there are computers and printers in the Business Advising Center that you are welcome to use. There are also advisors there to assist you.

6. What if I don’t qualify to declare upper division? What can I take?
There are nine units of upper-division general education courses (Explorations) that all SDSU students must take to meet graduation requirements. Refer to the “General Education” pages in the Class Schedule or General Catalog to get details on what the classes are and how to choose them. The staff at the Office of Advising and Evaluations, Student Services (SS) 1551, can also help you. Some majors in Business require courses in departments outside of Business, such as Economics or Communications, which may be available to students before they declare upper division Business. Additionally, some disciplines within the business majors require electives which can be taken outside of business. Ask the BAC staff for details about the courses for particular business majors.
