Declaration FAQ

1. When should I declare?
If you are ready to declare your upper division major for Fall 2009, you may declare beginning Nov. 30th. You must have at least a 2.9 overall GPA, and have completed the nine major prep courses OR be enrolled in the remaining major prep courses. If your gpa is not a 2.9 you must wait until your grades are posted for Fall 2009 and declare or request to be placed on the waitlist beginning Jan. 5th.

2. What if I am still taking some of the prep courses in Fall?
If you are taking a prep course at another school, you must provide an unofficial copy of your transcript to the BAC when you declare AND have your official transcript sent to the Office of Advising and Evaluations when your grades are posted at your transfer institution.

3. What if I don’t have a 2.9 GPA?
If you have completed all the major prep courses, but your overall GPA is below 2.9 you may request to be placed on the wait list. There is a new waiting list each semester. If there are any spaces available when all the fully qualified students have been accommodated, we will fill the remaining slots with students from the waiting list, in GPA order.

4. Why is my GPA on my Degree Evaluation different from the one on WebGrades and which one do you use?
Usually the two GPAs are the same, but the two computers use slightly different rules to calculate your GPA. If you have questions about discrepancies between the GPA on your evaluation and on your transcript, please consult the Office of Advising and Evaluations for more information.

5. What is the waiting list?
If you have taken all the prep courses, but your GPA is below 2.9 at the end of Fall, we can put you on the waiting list. There is a new waiting list each semester, so even if you have been on the list in the past, you must still reapply each semester. If there are any spaces available when all the fully-qualified students have been accommodated, we will fill the remaining slots with students from the waiting list, in GPA order.

6. Once I have declared my major, how do I know what to take?
When you come in to declare upper division, we recommend that you print out a copy of the courses required for your major and the sample programs for that major. These advising aids are available on our website and there are computers and printers in the Business Advising Center that you are welcome to use. There are also advisors there to assist you..

7. What if I don’t qualify to declare upper division? What can I take?
There are nine units of upper-division general education courses (Explorations) that all SDSU students must take to meet graduation requirements. Refer to the “General Education” pages in the Class Schedule or General Catalog to get details on what the classes are and how to choose them. The staff at the Office of Advising and Evaluations, Student Services (SS) 1551, can also help you. Some majors in Business require courses in departments outside of Business, such as Economics or Communications, which may be available to students before they declare upper division Business. Additionally, some disciplines within the business majors require electives which can be taken outside of business. Ask the BAC staff for details about the courses for particular business majors.
