Carol in the Temple of Ramses II "The Great" 1998 December |
The joint SDSU-USD doctoral program offers the opportunity to focus on theoretical research, evaluation and practical applications in educational technology. The program promotes leadership, collaboration between two universities, and "wise and humane use of technology in education." Carol intends to examine more closely the cognitive learning theories and the integration of technology in higher education such as classroom-based technologies, utilizing the Internet and wireless systems. She also has an interest in distance learning applications because she enjoys collaborating with other universities within the US and Europe.Carol is a strong believer in lifelong learning and promotes international cultural understanding. Her deceased father, Tadao (an engineer), and her mother, Chiharu Bitsy (a nurse), encouraged Carol and her three younger sisters to obtain a renaissance education in the humanities, arts, social sciences and sciences. They provided every opportunity to visit museums and libraries, attend concerts and plays, take piano, oil painting and dance lessons, and travel throughout the world.
Since the age of three, ancient Egyptian and Greek history and culture have been major influences in Carol's life. As a Philhellene, Carol has traveled extensively to Greece (since 1974) to visit friends, to visit the archaeological sites and Byzantine churches, to exchange information about computer technology with colleagues at the Greek universities, and to enjoy the good life. To appreciate and understand others, one can learn the language and customs to communicate effectively. Thus, Carol has been studying modern Greek since 1997. In 2001, she visited Kazakhstan to stay with her friends, the Greek Ambassador and his wife, Joan.
As a board director of the Hellenic Cultural Society in San Diego (HCS), Carol has worked closely with President Koulaxes and Gaucho Graphics to design the current HCS web site. The HCS researches, preserves and promotes the great work of philosophers, historians, scientists, mathematicians, writers, artists and other brilliant minds of Greek origin. HCS offers free lectures and sponsors cultural events such as children's programs.
In addition, Carol designed and built the first web sites of UCSD's School of Medicine and Center for Wireless Communications.
Carol is also a member of the :
- Archaeological Institute of America
- European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction
- Friends of Classics at SDSU
- International Society for Performance Improvement
