Precollegiate Academic Services
Precollegiate Academic Services are a series of CSU and SDSU sponsored initiatives that serve to increase the academic achievement of all California students in mathematics, reading, and writing. They respond to both the CSU mandate of reducing the need for remediation to less than 10 percent for first-time freshmen by 2007, and the recommendation of the California Education Round Table for partnerships between the CSU and K-12 education. The initiatives are characterized by structured collaboratives between various academic departments and Student Outreach Services in partnership with local K-12 school districts and other segments of higher education. The Precollegiate Academic Development Program (PAD)
The PAD program is designed to prepare California students for college preparatory course work and to provide information that will enhance student access to colleges and universities. The PAD program specifically encourages the development of mathematics and language art skills. San Diego State University-trained tutors provide individual and group tutorials in English and mathematics classrooms in schools throughout the San Diego County. The PAD program has both a middle school and high school component. In addition, tutors serve as mentors and provide materials stressing early preparation for college. The PAD program has an equally important role of encouraging more California State University students to pursue careers in education. Please contact Jose Preciado, Project Coordinator, at (619) 594-2209 or e-mail at preciado@mail.sdsu.edu.
CSU-High School Collaborative Academic Preparation Initiatives
- Focus 10 AVID Tutoring Program
- Focus 10 Math/Reading and Writing Tutoring Program
Using the organizational structure of the PAD program and in collaboration with the Sweetwater Union High School District, San Diego City Schools, Grossmont Union High School District, and the San Diego County Office of Education, Student Outreach Services designed and implemented two tutorial support programs in mathematics, reading and writing using SDSU-trained students. The first tutorial program, the Focus 10 AVID Tutoring Program, assists eleventh and twelfth grade students in the AVID elective classroom using collaborative learning techniques and other educational methodologies used by the AVID program. The second program the Focus 10 Math/Reading and Writing Tutorial Program is a parallel initiative to the Faculty-to-Faculty in-services program coordinated by the College of Arts and Letters and the Division of Undergraduate Studies. EPT/ELM Articulation Conference
Student Outreach Services coordinates and supports the annual EPT/ELM Articulation Conference, which hosts approximately 180 high school educators. Coordination includes all aspects of conference planning, preparation and execution, utilizing input and direction from the EPT/ELM Articulation Conference Committee. This project is a collaboration between the Division of Student Affairs and the Division of Academic Affairs. Please contact Jose Preciado, Project Coordinator, at (619) 594-2209 or e-mail at preciado@mail.sdsu.edu.SAT I Test Preparation Services for Prospective EOP Students
Student Outreach Services coordinates and implements test preparation services to increase the number of students who are exempt from remediation as SDSU first-time freshmen. The test preparation services are intended to serve as both an academic enrichment exercise and a recruitment activity for economically and educationally disadvantaged students. Further, this project enhances our standing educational collaboratives with local school districts, the California Student Opportunity and Access Program and AVID, San Diego County Office of Education. Moreover, the implementation process is specifically designed to ensure continuity of services for the following year through the active involvement of partner schools and their faculty.
