Why SDSU Sports MBA

Valuable business education: Although highly specialized for the sports industry through sports-specific coursework, case studies, class discussions, guest lecturers, and consulting projects, the Sports MBA curriculum offered is an accredited Master of Business Administration (MBA).  Graduates of the program receive an MBA diploma from the College of Business Administration at SDSU that is structured for relevance and maximum utility in the modern sports industry.  Sports MBA graduates posses a strong quantitative skill set that is applicable to any commercial segment of the sports world. These skills are also translatable to other industries outside of sports, allowing our graduates to apply their MBA to any future professional endeavor, a degree of flexibility unavailable to most graduates of traditional sports management MA or MS degree programs.

Accelerated Classroom Experience: The SDSU program is the only sports-specific MBA program- and one of the few MBA programs nationwide- that can be completed in under 18 months. The SDSU schedule is a 12 month intensive session in the classroom, followed by a 6 month consulting experience in the sports field. The consultancy period is purposely positioned at the end of the program, affording our graduates the best possible opportunity to remain with their respective sports organizations in a full-time capacity immediately following their consulting period and graduation from SDSU.

Location in San Diego: San Diego’s average annual temperature of 65 degrees, over 300 days of sunshine per year, and abundance of outdoor recreation areas make our city not only an ideal place to live, but also a heaven for outdoor sports of all kinds. With the widespread appeal of the San Diego region within the sports industry, this area is home to professional teams, headquarters of major sports equipment, apparel, and memorabilia companies, collegiate athletics, and major international sporting events, providing the best possible environment in which to pursue a career in sports.

Worldwide Industry Partnerships: In addition to our local partnerships in San Diego and Southern California, SDSU’s connections in the sports industry truly span the globe.  Following the twelve month classroom experience, students are permitted to conduct a six month as a sports business consultant anywhere in the world. Our extensive work with the San Diego Padres in the Dominican Republic and in-class focus on international opportunities help prepare students to succeed in a sports industry position within the U.S. or abroad.

Dedicated Alumni Network: One of the premier advantages of the SDSU program is its dedicated network of alumni currently working in the sports industry. SDSU Sports MBA alumni serve as guest lecturers, student career mentors, and are enormously dedicated to connecting students and fellow alumni with high-level job opportunities in the sports industry.

Unparalleled Industry Leader: The Sports MBA program is proud to host SDSU International Sports MBA Case Competition, the industry’s first sports-specific case competition that features an international grouping of the brightest graduate business minds working on a sports-themed case study. This event annually attracts numerous Top 25 U.S. and international MBA programs to compete against a team from SDSU Sports MBA.

Partnership with the San Diego Padres: SDSU’s Sports MBA is the only program of its kind that was created in partnership with a Major League Baseball franchise, a relationship that greatly enhances the student academic experience with insider access to a professional front office and ballpark. Though the Padres and their business operations are a learning tool for SDSU students, our curriculum focuses on the entire sports business industry- not just baseball- and students use what they learn from the club to apply to their chosen field within the industry.
