Afro-Mexican demographics in southern Mexico

Background history:

The official policy of the Mexican government has been to highlight the fact that Mexican heritage is the result of the mixing of indigenous people and Europeans from the time of the Spanish Conquest and colonization of the land in the 16th century. But, Mexico's third root, the heritage emerging from the African population brought to American territory has yet to enjoy the same degree of attention.

Mexico's third root:

Historical documents note the arrival of black peoples during the Conquest and later during the colonial period (1519 - 1810). Some historians believe between 200,000 to 500,000 Africans were brought to Mexico while other historians put the number well below 100,000.

Points of entry:

Veracruz and Acapulco were the ports authorized for the importing of slaves during the colonial period period. Over time, other ports were opened for the importing and distribution of slaves thourghout all of New Spain: Tuxpan and Campeche along the Gulf of Mexico, and San Blas on the Pacific Ocean.
