Afro-history in Mexico
As the colonial period for Mexico unfolded, in particularly during the 16th and 17th period. The indigenous population became decimated by European diseases. To make up for this labor shortage, African slaves were brought to toil in sugar plantations and in silver mines. African slaves were worth four times more than their indigenous indian counter parts, they were higly prized for their stamina and endurance. Also, Africans had built up an immunity against European diseases which made them even a better choice for enslaved labor.
In 1829 slavery was officially outlawed in Mexico. Ex-slaves were free to pass through Mexico, some assimilated into the greater population and others decided to stay as collectives in small communities. These communities can still be found in the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Guerrero.
