Founded during the 2006-2007 academic year, SELACH, la Sociedad estudiantil de lengua, artes y culturas hispánicas, is the student organization of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at San Diego State University. We are dedicated to the advancement of the academic and cultural life of undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of Hispanic linguistics and Iberian and Latin American literature and culture studies. By encouraging discussion and intellectual interaction between students and faculty in the humanities and social sciences, we hope to provide opportunities for heightened academic development and foster scholarly growth in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the College of Arts and Letters.
We are also committed to promoting interdisciplinary approaches to the study of language, literature and culture, a tenet that we strive to uphold through collaboration in academic forums and events for students and faculty of all branches of the humanities and social sciences.
In striving to live up to our mission, the efforts of our members, officers, and faculty supporters have yielded events featuring guests and speakers from several countries in Latin America and all corners of the United States and Spain. Thanks to our working relationship with the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Associated Students of SDSU, and the College of Arts & Letters Council, our members have also obtained financial support to attend conferences and present their research across the country. In the past we have held events featuring linguists, writers, and academics from throughout California and the border region. This culminated in the rejuvenation of the Spanish and Portuguese Department’s Third Annual Bi-National Graduate Student Conference in April, 2009. Organized by Cynthia Meléndrez and Juan Carlos Moraga Vidal, SELACH provided logistical support and
Our administrative meetings are bi-weekly on Wednesdays at 2:00pm in AL 132 (SUBJECT TO CHANGE). Our next event, the Graduate Student Orientation, is on Tuesday, August 25th at 10:00AM in AL-132!
Also, a special thanks to all faculty, students and administrative staff in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese for their participation and support over the years! A special thanks is due to our advisor Dr. Claudia Angelelli, Department chair Dr. Alda Blanco and las reinas administrativas of the first floor of Arts & Letters, Margaret Posner and Alicia Garcia!
Here’s to advancing intellectual life at our institution and beyond!
