BACKGROUND
The California Wild Heritage Act, if passed, will designate 2.4 million
additional acres of wilderness on Bureau of Land Management and Forest
Service land in California and will also designate sections of 22 rivers
as "Wild and Scenic." The areas are
distributed across the state, and represent a wide range of elevations
and
habitat types. In San Diego, we have 44,000 acres of
proposed wilderness, including important un-road chaparral and oak
forest at the head of the San Diego River watershed (Eagle Peak Complex),
riparian habitat along Hauser Creek and chaparral habitat on Hauser Mountain,
and two additions to existing desert wilderness areas, the Carrizo Gorge
Wilderness and Sawtooth Mountains Wilderness. We also have proposed
Wild and Scenic river segments on the San Diego River, Cedar Creek, and
Pine
Valley Creek.
