Well this is my experience

First of all stand properly in queue since the visa officer was giving quick glances to me and other students.

On moving to window i greeted him and vice-versa.
The questions asked were
1 why sdsu
2 what were ur undergraduate grades
3 tell me about ur undergraduate programs
4 what is ur mother doing
5 what is ur grandfather doing

After that he looked at various finance papers such as fds, it returns.
Well at the end he was happy with my performance and gave me the visa.

The only thing they look for u is ur confidence and only confidence thats it

Hi friends..i got the visa for san diego state univ.
on 17th june..i am writing this mail regarding my
experience in the visa interview...
my interview was as follows..

VO: Hello how r u?(with smile)..
me:i m fine..how r u mam?(with smile)
VO: i m fine too.. pick up the phone
me:(on phone)Good afternoon mam..
VO:ok..so..whts your father?
me: He is __________________.
VO: whats his annual income?
me: __________.
VO: but the fees r 10 times more than the annual
income? how will u pay?
me: I have some amount in savings & FDs also..
VO: how much in savings?
me: ___________.
VO: how much in FDs?
me:______________.
VO: can i see the bank papers for FDs?
me: ya sure..( i was about to show but...)
VO:ok tell me the maturity date for FDs.
me: its in 2004 2005..
VO: for all FDs?
me: ya..
VO:(after some time...)Do u have any relatives there?
me: no.
VO: ok u will get ur passport by courier..
me:(with great relief)thank u mam..

I was in so hurry that i forgot my token there then i
collect it back...so without seen any documents..i got
the VISA..but frankly speaking..all depends on
"LUCK"..
I m going for MS in Computer science..for SDSU

i finally got my visa for SDSU on 23 june at delhi consulate(08:00-08:30).

joined the line at 8 exactly for pre screening ..i was one of the early bird...counter 1 called me up .....guy (indian) in check shirt ..said something which i cudnt hear ..properly due to gr8 song being played at background ....
AMERICAAAAAA AMERICAAAAAAA.....dhut tere kiii ..where am i heading :))

that asshole went berserk .....forms draft passport ...i imme slipped them in ...he quickly ...marked 1 question....write here ..advisors name ....
and SAID JOIN THE Q again .......i was ....:(...and gave him shower of ABUSES ........(!@!@#@##$#%$$^%%^&^& ...what a dickhead)..anyways ..i joined the Q again ....calmed myself ...had a chit chat with few fellow visa seekers....soon was back to normal .....just erased what happened few mins ago...)...

and then window 2 called me up ...there was a cool guy here....heavy built with specks...he was soooo helpful ....actually helped one guy ...with his snap....it was not of proper dimensions ....he looked around for scissors and snipped it into 50 X 50...what a guy .....screened me thro in a jiffy ...too.

remember 4 things(I know its easy to say ....but this is the INTERVIEW)

1. be confident(have an attitude .. IF NOT ME than WHO ELSE..???)
2. please smile ...(its the second best thing u can do with ur lips.)
3. talk slowly and loudly ( i forgot this and went patar patar patar)
4. LOOK VO in the EYES( although it was damn easy in my case)

my VO was a BLONDE FAMOUS young lady ....in her late 20's..gray eyes....pink lipstick ...purple nailpolish .....EXAMINE ur VISA OFFICER...i do this ...to stay cool and focussed

my questions were:

g- i was stunned ....shit not her....
g-good morning mam ...(just imagine .....what she asked ..what i replied)

1.y usa?
No academic institution in india offers a master level program with specialization in GIS,hence i had to consider my options outside india.
USA has worlds finest univ system with outstanding programs from traditional disciplines as well as professional fields ....thats y USA.

2.y ur sister is in usa ?
i was stunned ....kuch jaldi pooch liya yeh q ..although i was expecting this .. kuch or pooch le BB...(maar gayye beta gagan)

G-my sister went to USA on h4 visa after she got married.then she got H1b visa on basis of her qualification. My brother in law has been in usa from 1994 and he applied for Legal PR and he was offered PR .

(just spit it out that u cant issue me a visa...Blonde Bitch)

3.y sdsu?
primarily 2 reasons
course structure being offered to students whose interest is GIS.The curriculum includes Decision Support Sys,Spatial Data Mining ,GIS,GPS etc

research being done in the field of Forest Fragmentation (thanks madhura :) )

4.how many univ u applied?
G- 5 in all

5.other accepts ?
G- Univ of Texas @ Dallas

6.who is funding u ?
My Father

7.what is he ?
He is Asst General Manager in a Nationalized bank.

8.his annual income ?
4 lacs 30 thousand

9.how will he pay your fees for 2 years ?
from several years,my parents have put aside money for my education.I was on free seat in my under grad college for 4 years.

10.have u taken any loan ?
yes mam ,i have bank approval letter for loan sanction.I feel my parents have done enough for me and now i feel i am mature and responsible enough to pay for my own masters level education

11. show me your test scores?
showed her.......slipped the score sheets to her.

12. why are there canadian universities on ur GRE score card ?
( i applied to some canadian univ too)
mam i was not aware of this free score forwarding procedure.after my test i was asked to write 4 univ numbers from a looong list of univ...which i did.I randomly picked 4 numbers and later i found out that 2 out of 4 r canadian univs :).....

13 show me your engineering mark sheet?
showed her.......slipped the score sheets to her....made a face patta nahin kya pasand aa gayya ......i said i passed with distinction mam ...80%.


14. why after one year ?

I was amongst the toppers, I was really concerned about securing my division and position. Also during my crucial final year I was involved in project" XYZ". Henceforth I gave my gre in Nov 2003 and toefl in dec 2003…..applied and started looking for a job/live project.

15. why did u resign from job even before ur visa ?
G-Mam,job was never a priority for me, i want to do masters and then come back and look for a job at a managerial level.I resigned b4 hand becoz I believe that i deserve my VISA and u will be kind enuf to issue me one.....(blonde gave me a smile....finally hassiiiiiii)

16. I dont think u r coming back to India ,why will u come back ?
LOOKED DEEP INTO HER EYES ....and SERIOUSLY said..

MAM...u wud have been absolutely right had it been late 90's india b4 IT revolution ..but now situation has drastically improved...after IT revo ..
India has earned its place as global IT power...all mnc are coming to india ..indian comp like infosys wipro r doing a tremendous job (both in india and abroad)...
also for IT ppl ...we dont have to be away from home to deliver the guds...we can deliver everything from home..thats what we have been doing ..all offshore projects...and outsourcing solutiions ..hence i will come back to my HOME country.

..NOW GAVE HER MY KILLER SMILE WHICH SHE FOUND HARD TO RESIST :)


17. how far is the university from your sister's home ?
(what kind of question are these .... ....)

G-7 hrs Drive...( i dont knw how far is it in real )

she gave me a sticker .....i said ..abe visa mil gayya ....turned back and ran from that window ....no thank you nothing ....was in ethereal state..
gave sticker to tts ....and they gave envelope ..and i wrote my address on the envelope...and i came outttttt....gave a BIG HUG to mum dad......
..

please .....i would suggest to please declare ur immediate relatives if any ..residing in usa ...i was in dilemma weeks b4 visa whether to do or not ....
and made a decision to declare my sisters status ....thanks to jay kothari and piyush goel ..

pray to god ...have faith ..have confidence....they r sitting to ISSUE VISAS ..not to reject visas..

Gave me a glance and then kept looking into the
Monitor.

Show me your passport .
I tried to take the Passport out of the complete
docket (Stapled by the officer at the window outside
the premises).

Okay,give me the entire bunch
Sure Sir.

So you are going to …. San Diego State…
San Diego State University

Why SDSU?
Sir,I had a call from 3 universities and amongst them
SDSU is the best for computer science.

How many Universities did you apply to?
5 in all sir: SDSU,Colorado State,UNR,Hawaii Pacific
and CSU Fresno.

Show me your GRE scores?
I tried to take out the GRE scorecard (from GRE-TOEFL
combo)

(looks at me )Okay give me both.
Sure Sir


See you have a good GRE /TOEFL score ,why didn’t you
apply to some of the UCs (University of California
segment)?(Gives me the example of UC Irvine , UCSD).I
am sure you could have got there…(why HPU ,its way
behind SDSU) (I was completely stunned with such a
long and complex question)

(After a little thinking )Sir, the cost of education
in these private universities is really high (Nods in
Agreement).I applied to these universities because the
probability of getting an acceptance from them were
more. Moreover my GRE score didn’t match with my
expectations.So I thought…(interrupts me)

He kept my papers in the basket on his left
SDSU is a very good school
I nodded in agreement.

Who will pay for your education?
My Father

What does he do?
He is working as a Professor with the Indian Institute
of Mass Communication.(Shifts his attention to the guy
sitting next to him,returns back) .Sir,he teaches
English Journalism.. (looks completely unconcerned)

Good Luck
(After around 5 seconds,picks up the sticker) Give
this to the TTS counter (shows me the way)

Thank you .

I went to the TTS counter and handed over the sticker
to him. The guy sitting there gave me a brown envelope
and asked me to write my contact information on
it.After I handed over the envelope to him he said,you
will receive your passport via courier within next 7
days.
