FAQs General Information and Things to carry Visa Documents & Interview Health Insurance and Registration Health Insurance & Registration There have been a lot many questions about health insurance and vaccination. Q :What is the promissory note for ?? Health insurance is mandatory for all students on F1 visa. The first thing you have to do is send the "YELLOW" form that you received in your welcome packet. It is a promissory note which says that you will buying the insurance once you are here. Q: Can I buy the insurance for just one semester ? You can buy the insurance for just one semester or the whole year. I am not sure about the rates, they must have mentioned about this in your welcome packet. The draft or check should be made payable to SOMERTON INSURANCE. Q: When should I pay my insurance fees ? Will I be able to register for the courses on Aug 6th, the first day to register, if I am going to arrive after Aug 6th and have paid the full registration fees but haven't paid insurance fees (but have sent the promissory note to ISC..) ? Will there be an Insurance Hold on my registration ? It is a policy here in SDSU that you can not register for the courses unless you have paid the insurance fees and got your "Insurance Hold" cleared. Now since you are a new student, they ask you to send the promissory note. Once they receive your promissory note they will clear your "Insurance Hold" for one month till the classes begin. that makes it possible for you to register for the courses and attend the classes. If you don't pay your insurance fees by that time you will receive a notification about it. So the only thing that you have to do sitting back home is to send the "yellow form". Q: What about the vaccination ? I would suggest you to get the MMR, HEP B, Typhoid & Tuberculosis vaccination done. Also I would suggest you to go for eyes and dental checkup. Please carry the medical documents for all the checkups and vaccinations so that you can produce them whenever required. Q: How do I pay my registration fees ? Either you send a draft/check of $1088 in the name of San Diego State University or you can directly pay it online using your credit card. Q. When will I be able to register for the courses? If you pay your registration fees by July 17th, then you should be able to register on Aug 6th. I think they open registration one week in advance for new students. So try logging in to the web portal at http://www.sdsu.edu/eservices . If you pay after this deadline then they will give you a new registration date which will be around 15/10 days after Aug 6th. If you are CS major you will hardly have any courses left and you will have to crash the courses. And if you don't know what crashing means, you will learn it once you are here !
