May 2, 2006 -DSCE and Akeelah at the Walker Elementary School's Bee-
Week May 2-5, 2006. -Walker Elementary, San Diego City Schools- enthusiastically supported by Monika Hazel, Principal and hosted by the teachers in their classes.
- Drawing on Friday for one primary student and one upper grade student win a pair of movie passes. All other prizes were distributed across grade levels during the in-class Bees.
- A special thanks to Cheryl Pham (Bee pic) for bringing the DSCE Bee to Walker Elementary and bringing Starbucks on board for a breakfast/promotional station, manned by Monika Hazel, Principal, and Cheryl Pham.
- Teachers, parents and students were thrilled to be part of this promotion. This was a great success.
April 25, 2006 -DSCE and LionsGate "Akeelah and the Bee"-
Tuesday, April 25, -9:30p.m to 11:30pm. -Lecture Hall, Cross Cultural Center, UCSD - DSCE Social and Spelling Bee Contest, promoting Lionsgate Films "Akeelah and the Bee", starring Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, Keke Palmer. National opening night: Friday, April 28th.
- Lionsgate Films invited the DSCE to become an official promotional partner for the films release in San Diego.
- The DSCE organized a Spelling Bee with prizes for the winners. Prizes were promotional items provided to us by the Lionsgate Films industry (movie passes, T-shirts, pencils, notebooks, bookmarks, stickers, pocket dictionary, word cards).
- The DSCE thanks its volunteers for successfully organizing this event on a short notice: Cindy Lewis, Lorah Bodie, Cheryl Pham, and Pam Wright. Photo Gallery here
- A special thanks to the Pacific Town Square All Stadium 14 Theatre for donating 4 movie passes.

Wednesday, March 22, -7:00-9:00p.m. -Presidential Suite (SDSU Aztec Center) -Welcome and Opening Remarks by Dr. Mason, SDSU Program Director and DSCE Faculty Advisor, Presentations by Dr. Ron Evans and Dr. Dena Plemmons.
- Issues that were raised: Character issues (honesty, integrity, doing what's right/best for society and others) in tension with Reality (prestige, ego, ambition). Teaching and/or Research. Is "Publish or Perish" real? Plagiarism or Sloppiness. The "other skills" in Research (time management, stress management, negotiation management, goal setting skills, and others). IRB's limitations. Due Diligence, Publication and Loss of Control. Copyright issues and Fair Use practices. Discipline-related issues.
- References to and commentaries about the Ethical Standards of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).
- Last thoughts: "Research is not a right." "Be comfortable with ambiguity, Learn to make a decision when facing ambiguity, Come to Research with a sense of humility and honesty."
February 8, 2006 -Research Ethics Seminar Series-
Wednesday, February 8, -12:00-1:30p.m. -P146 (SDSU Physics Bldg) - Research and Ethics: Reality, Ideals, and Evidence, Presented by Michael Kalichman, Director, UCSD Research Ethics Program, and Camille Nebecker, Director, SDSU Division of Research Affairs.
- Questions that were raised: What do we know about the Standards? What do trainees know about the standards? Do researchers want to do the right things? Do researchers have skills to make good decisions?
- 4 types of training were identified: Philosophical approach to Ethics; Methodology courses with Ethics imbedded in the training (variable with discipline); Training by mentors, PI, head of group of research; Formal training (course).
