Capture college memories on digital camera

If you are just about to go away for higher education to a different city or country you may want to consider packing a digital camera. Digital cameras are a great cost effective way to record memories of your college life, and email them to friends and family just by a click. Although they wont be ‘memories’ when you shoot the photographs, you and your friends will treasure them after a few years.

Great Photos

The greatest thing about a photograph is that it records an instant in time. Every photograph has a memory attached to when/ who took it,, and what kind of mood was in the air and such things. The drawback with digital is, that its very easy to lose an image by deleting it without reasoning first, or maybe losing a photograph because of a crashed hard drive etc. Its therefore, necessary to back up your favorite images on a CD or an external device like a zip drive. CDs of course are better to use than something like a zip drive or an IPOD, because images have less chances of being wiped off from a CD. You can carry a few favorite images on an IPOD, but that’s just a temporary solution isnt it. Another great way to store and share your photographs is to put them up online on something like yahoo photos. Of course, you may not want to display some of your personal images on the net, but it works for most party and outing images. Remember to ask everyone in the photograph if it’s ‘ok’ before putting them online for the whole world to see. Such things offend many people.

College Memories on SLR

For college life records, it may be a better idea to buy a lightweight compact rather than a heavy SLR. A compact can be carried around in a shirt pocket or a college back pack, but an SLR demands more care. If you are a photo enthusiast or hobbyist, even if you plan to become a professional some day, Id still suggest you own a compact (even if you already own a DSLR), for everyday use. For one thing, if you are going to be carrying your camera all around the campus and to parties, you would like to be in some of the images wouldn’t you? If you are going to ask a friend to shoot a photograph of you every now and again, the simpler the camera is to use, the better your chances are of getting a decent image. There are many SLR owners who don’t have many great photographs of themselves!

This article is written keeping the average college student in mind, of course, and I agree there may be many photographers who would say that buying a DSLR is the smart way to go. Maybe true in some ways, but you really cannot carry an SLR wherever you go, but a compact does fit in snugly into a handbag or jacket…
