while on your trip

When traveling in foreign countries, you should always be on alert for potential problems. Following these simples rules will lead to a more enjoyable trip:

Protecting Valuables

Travel with credit cards and/or traveler's checks. Only carry enough cash for 1 to 1 1/2 days of travel at a time.

Be aware of the current exchange rate. Only cash in traveler's checks at a bank or reputable establishment (like a hotel). Do not be conned into getting a "better rate" from someone on the street.

Leave valuables at home! If you have to bring it with you, try to keep items in your possession as much as possible or lock them in a hotel safe.

When carrying money and valuables with you, keep them secured as close to you as possible. Do not put items in outside pockets or open purses.

Safety

Avoid walking alone in remote parts of the towns and cities - even during the day.

Do not travel between cities at night.

Eating and drinking

Do not drink tap water! Drink only bottled water (agua pura). This includes the water used for brushing your teeth.

Respecting Local Customs

When taking photos of local people, it is polite to ask first. Many prefer not to have their picture taken...especially those in the highlands.

Be aware of the local dress. Highland women tend to dress very conservatively - they do not show their shoulders or legs. Female tourists wishing to "blend in" should keep this in mind and dress appropriately.
