Edgar Vargas is an undergraduate senior majoring in Psychology and an MBRS scholar. He is currently working on two separate public health studies as an RA for SDSU and UCSD. The focus of his research includes HIV/AIDS as it pertains to sexual risk behavior of Latino males, and binational social marketing techniques used in the southern region of California/Mexico. This past summer Edgar was one of 14 students selected throughout the US to attend the ASTP statistical training program hosted by the APA in Washington D.C. He is currently working on graduate schools applications, studying for the GRE, publications, and helping SACNAS thrive.

Juana Vaquero is an undergraduate senior Psychology student with a minor is child development and a McNair scholar. Her career objective is to become a School Psychologist and work with children in low income communities. Her research interest includes bilingual education and developmental psychology. Some of the activities she loves engaging in her spare time include soccer, eating Mexican candy, dancing, and creating websites. Juana has been a member of various multi-cultural organizations such as M.E.Ch.A., the Student Retention Recruitment Board, Raza Rights Coalition, and Ameri-Crops.

Nelly Gonzalez is an undergraduate senior Psychology student minoring in Sociology and Spanish. She is also a McNair scholar and plans on graduating in the spring of 2008. Her career objective is to obtain a PhD in Counseling Psychology and work with the Latino community. She has presented her research at the APA conference.

Maribel Sanchez is an undergraduate senior majoring in Geography/Emphasis in Urban and Regional Analysis with a minor in Latin American Studies. Her career objective is to gain a credential in Special Education and Single Subject Geography to teach in low income communities. However, her ultimate goal is to obtain a Ph.D. in Geography to continue teaching and conduct research in her research area. Some of her research interests include research on urban and social geography with an emphasis on families and communities, qualitative and post structural methods in geography emphasis on feminist, critical theory and history of geographic thought. Maribel has been a member of various community grassroots organizations of San Diego inner city area, including MAAC Project, Barrios Unidos Hoy Organizados (BUHO), Justice Overcoming Boundaries, and Americorps National Service. She is currently an active member of the Student Faculty Mentorship Program at SDSU. She continues to be active with non-profit community organizations that assist low income communities. Her goal for this summer is to take part in a research program; she is currently applying for summer research programs.


Daniela Michel is a third year undergraduate Biology major hoping to become a medical examiner or a professor. She is currently a member of AMSA. Last semester, she participated in the breast cancer walk in San Diego. Also, Danie has attended "Dia De Los Muertos" medical school conference and has participated in an anatomy lab. Danie is a SACNAS member and is the new Treasurer officer for the spring of 2008. She is currently applying for a summer research program in Astrobiology.

Dalia Pimentel is an undergraduate Psychology student with a minor in Spanish. She will graduate next May and plans on going to graduate school and eventually obtaining a PhD. in Counseling Psychology. Currently, she is the Event Coordinator for SACNAS SDSU Chapter and a scholar in the McNair Scholars Program at SDSU.

 

Lagina Scott is an underdraduate junior Biology student. Her career goal is to become a pediatrician or family doctor. She has been involved in several on campus organizations such as the Freshman Leadership Connection, the Black Student Science Organization, InterVarsity (Christian club), the Cross Cultural Committee, and now SACNAS. Last year, she joined AmeriCorp (A National Community Service Organization), through which she did volunteer tutoring and instructed a leadership class at a local junior high school. She looks forward in being the CSSC Representative for SACNAS and helping the SDSU chapter blossom into a wonderful community-connected organization.

Nadia Merino is an undergraduate senior double majoring in Political Science and Chicana/o Studies with a minor in Latin American Studies and a McNair scholar. Recently, she conducted research during the summer of 2007 on Mixtec immigrant women from Oaxaca. She has presented at the Pacific Southwest Women's Studies Association Conference and the UCSD Summer Research Conference. She has received several awards and honors including the Cesar Chavez Commemorative Scholarship, the Roberto Gracia Memorial Scholarship, and was selected as a Sally Casanova California Pre-Doctoral scholar.

Dr. Isidro D. Ortiz is a professor at the Chicana/o Studies Department at SDSU. He has been teaching at SDSU for 29 years. Dr. Ortiz also taught for a few years at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is the director of the Faculty-Student Mentoring Program for the College of Arts and Letters and a member of the Concilio of Chicano Studies.

Michelle Lopez is the Associate Director of the SDSU MBRS/IMSD program in the College of Sciences, Center for the Advancement of Students in Academia office. She has ten years' experience in science program administration, developing research and other professional development activities, and coordination of enrichment activities for science students. Her passion is educational outreach for underserved students, and to mentor and encourage students to pursue graduate studies. Her research interests include academic achievement and examining the predictors of academic success of underrepresented students in the sciences.
