Project Update
John Ross reported that the charge of the Red ID Conversion Team has been met and further work is now a maintenance issue versus an implementation issue. Rita Gajoli is heading up the Data Reconciliation Group, which will be cleaning up the data and establishing a maintenance process. The SDSU Card Office reports that 24,000 (out of 30,000) Red ID cards have been distributed.

Project (Post-Conversion) Update
The Red ID public kiosk web site is available to all and offers just a lookup option. Private kiosk access is for campus service providers. Use of a physical firewall and access request forms will control access to the private kiosk information. Level 3 private kiosk access will be addressed in the Reconciliation Group meetings. The Red ID will appear in the F11 SIMS-R screens with limited access to SSN. So far the only problem reported happened for a few Students who left the University and then came back as Staff; their marital status was wrong. Also foreign students with SSNs starting with 999, who have received new SSNs may cause a problem for preprinted cards. SDSU is working to incorporate the IVC campus people.

All SDSU affliated users can now retreive their Red ID number on-line, after submitting 3 pieces of information at this web site. New Red ID cards will not arrive until March 22. Students with meal plans will be able to pick up their cards early at the Card Office beginning March 8. This will ensure that they will not experience any disruption in meal service once they return from spring break.

Access to Student Information not Available Over Spring Break Red ID to Replace Social Security Number
for Identification at SDSUAs identity theft has become one of the fastest growing crimes in the nation, steps are being taken by various institutions to safeguard the personal information of consumers. Institutions of higher education have an obligation to both protect the privacy of students, as well as faculty and staff, and to safeguard any personal, non-public information.
The CSU system, and San Diego State University in particular, takes security seriously. Every effort is made to protect both the privacy of our faculty, staff and students and to ensure that any personal information is not unnecessarily exposed. In summer 2003, President Stephen Weber and the SDSU Cabinet Budget Committee approved funds to implement an alternative I.D. system that would protect identify even further.
The result of campus-wide collaboration between technical staff and end users is a new nine-digit ID number called "Red ID." Beginning March 22, all faculty, staff, and students will use their Red IDs for all transactions at SDSU. Some transactions include:
- Accessing the SDSU WebPortal
- Using library services
- Using Blackboard
- Communicating with Human Resources
- Accessing SIMS/R
- All Student services
Financial, regulatory, and reporting transactions will still use social security numbers.
Beginning March 4, 2004, faculty, staff and students will be able to obtain their Red ID numbers early by visiting www.sdsu.edu/RedID. New SDSU ID cards with new Red ID numbers will be provided at no cost.
The conversion to Red ID will occur during spring break. During this time, faculty and staff may not be able to access SIMS/R, WebPortal, or Blackboard. Other campus systems will also be impacted, including, but not limited to, Cashiers Office, Financial Aid, Aztec Shops, etc. The conversion may last up to a week. Please be prepared to not have access to student data during this time.
