Career Workshop with Chris E. Lee
On May 1, 2012 the Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate held a career workshop lunch for real estate majors and aspiring real estate professionals featuring Chris E. Lee, President and CEO of Cel & Associates, Inc. ;and Editor for Strategic Advantage. Mr. Lee overviewed current career options in real estate, the job outlook for real estate professionals, and the process for getting started in real estate today.


Commercial Real Estate Finance: On the Rebound On April 12, 2012 the Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate hosted a breakfast forum on commercial real estate finance. Chief Operating Officer of Capital Markets, Brian Stoffers lead a panel discussion of noteworthy experts. Event panelists included Michael Marino, Executive VP, Division Manager, Real Estate Banking Group Wells Fargo & Company; Scott Holmes, Senior VP, Acquisitions, Cole Real Estate Investments; Anthony Jaffe, Managing Director and head CMBS Origination J.P.Morgan, and Peter Cassiano, Director of Acquisitions, Invesco Real Estate. The forum discussion focused on institutional investing, investing strategies, and sources of capital.

Forecasting & Trend Analysis: Have We Hit Bottom? Perspectives on the Residential Recovery
On February 16, 2012 the Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate hosted a breakfast forum on market forecasts and trends. John Burns Real Estate Consulting Principal and real estate economist, Tim Sullivan lead Mark McMillin of The Corky McMillin Companies, Scott McClave of The Bascom Group, and Colin Weil of Waypoint Homes in a panel discussion. Panelists analyzed and discussed the outlook for residential space, the utilization of forecasting information for business planning, and the creation of reliable forecast models.

Dark Shops: The Redevelopment of Retail
On November 17, 2011 the Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate hosted a breakfast seminar on Dark Shops: The Redevelopment of Retail. Gary London, a prized economist from the London Group presented and moderated a panel including Jim Reynolds of Oliver McMillin, Steve Avoyer from Flocke and Avoyer and Kelly Broughton from the City of San Diego. The panel discussed the challenges and opportunities for retail redevelopment and provided the audience with varied perspectives on future growth and trends in retail product type in San Diego.

A Bump in the Road of Seismic Shift: The Impact of 3rd Quarter 2011 Capital Markets
On September 29, 2011 the Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate hosted an evening networking reception featuring Robert O’Brien, U.S. Real Estate Services Leader for DeLoitte and Touche LLP.  Mr. O’Brien presented an overview and analysis of capital market conditions for commercial real estate touching on the European debt crisis, U.S. credit downgrade and the state of the commercial mortgage backed security (CMBS) market.

Over 300 people attended the official kick-off of The Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate at SDSU at a reception which featured keynote speeches by San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and SDSU President Dr. Stephen Weber. The event took place at the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center on SDSU’s campus on Thursday, September 23, 2010.

During his address, Sanders declared it The Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate Day in San Diego as he presented a plaque to Corky McMillin’s sons, Mark McMillin and Scott McMillin.

Mark McMillin (’79, marketing) also took the stage and discussed how the family had donated $1.5 million to found the Center six years ago and the issues, setbacks and successes in finally making the Center a reality.

The Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate was established to meet three objectives:
•Improve the educational experience of SDSU real estate majors and students interested in real estate
•Promote high-quality academic real estate research
•Provide value-added products and services for the real estate industry

In addition to Sanders, Weber and McMillin, other speakers included Mike Neal (’84, real estate, ’96, M.S.), chair of SDSU’s real estate advisory board and CEO/President of H.G. Fenton Company; Dr. Gail Naughton, former dean of SDSU’s College of Business Administration; Dr. Michael Lea, director of The Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate; and Bryan Clark, president of the Real Estate Society of SDSU.
