Problem, Need, or Opportunity
Instructional Technology Services (ITS) at San Diego State University has been encountering basic and common errors while building SMART podiums and doing classroom installations. To solve this problem, the creation of a multimedia website will guide technicians as they prepare, build and finalize their own project. The user will be able to see a final, completed project. The website will be used as a reference guide for podium assembly and classroom installation regardless of an individual’s level of experience.
Audience
The targeted audience will include recently hired students and staff members new to SMART technology assembly. New student employees can use the web-based multimedia site as an introduction to SMART technology assembly before beginning a project. Less experienced staff members can quickly get up to speed on the assembly of the newest SMART podiums, as well as enhance their technical skills. Even our most advanced staff members will benefit from the procedures and tips offered by this website.
User Needs
My audience analysis provided excellent feedback and suggestions. My audience would like to see the following included in the website on SMART technology assembly:
· Accurate snapshots of equipment and procedures with brief descriptions
· Step-by-step instructions on how to build a SMART podium
· Specific tools needed
· Layout of the workroom identifying the location of equipment parts
· A history of SMART podiums
· Projector and mount installation instructions and visuals
· A complete schematic layout of equipment
All of these suggestions will be taken in consideration as
each page of the website is designed. For example, the website will include a
page describing step-by-step instructions for video projector mounting and
installation. Another page will include schematics identifying each piece of
equipment.
The topics of interest as expressed by the audience are fairly straightforward and therefore a simple navigation system with tabs will easily identify each section.
Environment
The user will always have access to the website via his or her portable computer in their office or near their workstation. Since the current infrastructure supports WIFI, users will only need a portable WIFI laptop with an Internet browser to access the website. The site will link to the ITS website.
At this time, photography will be the main media describing the process of the SMART technology assembly, but as time progresses, video and small animations can be incorporated into the website.
Resources and Limitations
This website is being designed to support our current staff. Any resources used in this website are for the benefit of the department and the department will remain owner of any photography or video taken by me to be used in this website. Most of the information provided in this website will be written by me and revised by the Chief Engineer for accuracy. No limitations are present at this time since all work is done in-house and all resources are within reach.
General Solution
This website will teach new and current staff members the processes
of building a SMART podium and doing classroom installations. Due to the high-end
technology used in these classrooms, it is imperative that the construction of
the SMART podium is consistent and accurate.
This website will be easy to navigate as it is divided into seven sections
describing the different phases of the project. Each section will provide a
great reference tool for technicians to answer any questions or concerns they
may encounter in the process of constructing a podium or doing classroom
installation.
