Proposal: SHRM Student Chapter
Devan Probert |
Problem, Need, or Opportunity
Students at San Diego State University need an information source for professional networking opportunities in Human Resources. A web page for the Society for Human Resource Management student chapter at SDSU will solve this problem by providing an online location for students to find updates about club activities, job opportunities, and information about the HR Specialization major.
Audience
The main audience will include students majoring in business related fields. Industry professionals looking for interns, college faculty, and anyone who wants to learn more about the organization will also view the web site.
Users Needs
Needs analysis interviews with 5 Chapter members and the Director of the HR Management Department helped identify the following list of requirements:
- Updates about upcoming speakers and activities
- Site that meets the University's guidelines for accessibility
- Description of requirements for the HR Specialization major
- List of job postings and career resources
- Overview of HR Management opportunities
- Links to the Business Department and affiliates
- Member requirements, bios, and contact information
Updates and information contained in an easy-to-use navigation system within the calendar, tabs for career, major, membership, and contact pages, and affiliate list will function together to meet student needs.
Environment
The site will be linked with the University's Management Department and most users will connect from a high speed internet source from home or the office. The site will be fully accessible to people with disabilities and will comply with federal regulations set forth for all public institutions. Search Engine Optimization will be employed so users will easily locate our site through key word searches. The web pages will follow the College's style guide in use of colors, images, and font. Pages will not exceed 20 kilobytes and the images will be optimized for fast loading time. A clean and professional design with effective use of negative space will ensure that readers quickly find the information they are looking for.
Resources and Limitations
Needed resources to build and maintain the web site and copyright permission to use SDSU images will be granted by the University. SHRM also allows registered chapters to use their logos. HiSoftware accessibility checker and Vischeck software for color blindness will verify that all pages meet accessibility legal requirements under Section 508 and the Disability Discrimination Act.
General Solution
A web site will provide a great way for students to learn about Human Resource Management opportunities through the University. The site will serve an important marketing function as well. Club advertisements will direct students to the web page so they can find out more about the organization to make an informed decision to join. Once students become members, regular updates will continually play an important role in maintaining member relations.
