Professional background and interests: Mr. Pierce's areas of special interest include the use of computers to advance social work practice. Other areas include mental health, substance abuse and domestic violence treatment. Mr. Pierce began teaching as an Assistant Professor / Lecturer in September 1996. He was a field instructor for the SDSU School of Social Work 1982 to 1999, supervising both clinical and administrative track students during that time. He worked for the County Department of Health and Human Services from September 1985 to September 1999. For a number of years, Mr. Pierce was a senior social worker specializing in child sexual abuse. In the past few years, he has led a number of projects that combined advancing social work practice with computer technology. He was the director of the Health and Education Passport project, which developed the first automated system to track the health and mental health care of children in foster care. He was a Team Leader for the Community Services Workstation project that began the design of integrated systems for the delivery of social services in the San Diego region. He currently works on the InfoTAP project, a Stuart Foundation grant, to design an agency which will help non-profits working children, youth and families with thier technology needs. Currently, Mr. Pierce is a consultant for SAY San Diego and an instructor in the Psychology Department at National University. |
