         Course Description

This course provides an introductory overview to the teaching profession, through university classroom and fieldwork expereince for those considering this career. This course is made up of two major components:

A
The university course is designed to deliver the basic tools necessary to successfully perform in a public education classroom, with the guidance of a Mentor Teacher. Basic concepts of the teaching profession will be introduced, such as classroom management, teaching methodology, theories of learning, and valuing cultural diversity in the classroom.

B
The component of fieldwork experience will be fulfilled by the student Proteégé spending ten hours a week in the classroom of the Mentor Teacher, while observing, participating in small group instruction, and assisting in the general duties/functions of daily classroom activity.


         Course Objectives
1
Protégé through actions and dress will demonstarte an awareness and understanding of the Mentor Teacher's expectations of Protégé comportment at the school site.

Protégé will have a better understanding of the teacher's role as a professional.

Protégé will become familiar with the different teaching strategies being used in the district's reading classes.

Protégé will learn about motivation theories and be able to apply them to motivate the middle school students.
5
Protégé will be aware of the district, state, and national curriculum standards being used in the schools.
6
Protégé will know of the different kinds of assessment being used in the schools.
7
Protégé will be knowledgeable of some classroom management strategies and will follow through with the classroom rules and procedures set by his/her mentor teacher.
