For Trip to Taiwan: June 23 - July 10 2000
PROJECT GOAL
This project aims at promoting international programs with Taiwan and to strengthen existing ties with academic and governmental organizations. Taiwan is a model for economic development and one of the largest trade partners of the US. We have a large number of graduates in Taiwan and there are strong existing ties with Taiwan. Taiwan continues to send a large number of students to SDSU. The on-going programs need to be strengthened.
MAJOR ACTIVITIES
1) Visited Academic Institutions and Met with Administrators and
Professors
I visited several academic institutions, including the following universities:
Cheng Kong University (Tainan, Taiwan) which has exchange programs with SDSU Key Person: Professor Cheng-Nan Chen, Chairman, Department of Management
Discussion items:
a) Co-sponsoring annual management conference in 2001,.
b) Joint MBA program, and
c) Strengthening existing relations.
Presentation: Presented a paper entitled "E-Commerce: Growth and Trends," July 8, 2000.
Chengchi University (Taipei) which has exchange programs with SDSU.
Key Persons: Professors Anne Wu and Hung-Chao Yu
Discussion items
a) Visiting professor programs, and
b) Strengthening existing relations.
Presentation: Presented a paper entitled "E-Commerce: Growth and Trends," July 8, 2000.
Tunghai University (Taichung) which had an exchange program with SDSU up to 1993 and discontinued recently. They would like to revive the program.

a) Co-sponsoring youth visiting program with the City of Taichung,
b) Reestablishing the formal exchange programs, and
c) Strengthening existing relations.
Chang Jung University

2) Met with Governmental Agencies in Taiwan
Discussed with City of Taichung on exchange programs relating to sister city activities, including a youth exchange visit program and making it an annual event.
3) Collected Materials and Documents for my teaching and research.
4) Attended the Annual Meeting of the North America Taiwanese Professors' Association (NATPA) and presented a paper titled "E-Commerce Strategy."
5) Met with SDSU Alumni in Taipei and Tainan to initiate possible programs.

July 7 (FRI): Visited Chengchi University and presented a paper
July 8 (SAT): Visited Cheng Kung University, Tainan, and presented a paper
July 9 (SUN): Visited Cheng Kung University
July 10 (MON): Back to San Diego
BENEFITS
My visits benefits SDSU and my professional growth in the following areas:
1) Advising students;
2) Including topics relating to Taiwan in lectures;
3) Sponsoring theses, research, and special studies for students relating to Taiwan;
Providing opportunities for graduate students working on topics relating to
Taiwan; Enabling students to interface with visiting student groups from
Taiwan, and participating in Taichung-San Diego Sister-City programs;
4) Sponsoring and organizing international conferences with Taiwanese
universities;
5) Making presentations to university and professional groups;
6) Instituting or strengthening exchange programs; and
7) Establishing contacts with the City of Taichung.
