U.S. Student Program

History

The U.S. Fulbright Program was established in 1946 to "enable the government of the United States to increase mutual understanding between people of the United States and other countries." It pursues this goal through the international exchange of students, scholars, and professionals. Opportunities are given to undertake graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.

The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, and is administered by Institute of International Education. Funding is provided through an annual Congressional appropriations. Costs are also shared by participating hosts institutions in the form of salary supplements, tuition waivers and university housing.

Each year the program awards grants to over 1,100 U.S. students to study, research, and teach in more than 140 countries worldwide. Students design their own programs which may include university coursework, library or field research, or professional training in the arts at music and art schools. Students may assistant teach English or choose to pursue in dependant projects in the social or life sciences. For a listing of previous projects visit the Directories of Fellows.
