Annual Student Research Conferences and Competitions

The following are annual conferences. Information on this page will be updated usually in late October. Old information will be left on this page until new information arrives because it gives an idea of what the deadlines and dates regularly are.

Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)

Deadline: 31 Jan 2008

Students eligible: Undergraduates only

Two Research Paper Competitions

  • General
  • Minority Issues

Prizes: $1,000; $750; $500

Requirement: Quantitative analysis of a dataset(s) held within the ICPSR archive, either the:

  1. General Archive OR
  2. Minority Data Resource Center (MDRC) for issues relevant to underrepresented minorities in the United States including immigrants

Papers are submitted electronically to: undergradpaper@icpsr.umich.edu

Since the webpage states that "submission of the paper to the ICPSR competition does not preclude the author(s) from submitting the content to other competitions", we encourage you to enter the other competitions as well.

San Diego State University (SDSU)

Deadline: February 4, 2008

Dates: Feb. 29 - Mar. 1, 2008

Students eligible:

  • Undergraduates
  • Graduates (MA and PhD)
  • Students who have graduated since Spring of last year

Disciplines: All

Awards:

  1. From each college: 2 awards of $250 each
  2. From campus: 10 awards of $500 each

Agenda:10-minute oral presentations with 5 minutes for questions and answers

Winners will go on to the CSU Student Research Competition, May 2 - 3, 2008, at CSU East Bay.

SDSU Symposium: More Details


Social Science Research and Instructional Council (SSRIC)

Deadline: April 18, 2008

Date: Friday, May 2, 2008 at CSU Long Beach

Students eligible:

  • Undergraduates
  • Graduates

Disciplines: Social Sciences

Awards: Three awards of $100 each plus a certificate

Requirements for an award:

  1. Oral presentation: about 15 mnutes in length
  2. Paper 20 pages or less in length.

It is also possible to just make a presentation. The atmosphere of the Conference is relaxed, and the emphasis is on meeting and sharing with students with similar interests from throughout the CSU.
