Important Resources
- Assessment Requirements
- To obtain the subject matter certification, and thereby avoid having to pass the CSET exams, students must earn
satisfactory grades, complete a portfolio, and submit a recommendation from their senior research supervisor or Physics 357
instructor. See Assessment Directions. (Note that the program
is under review by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing; until it is approved, students also have to pass the CSET exams.)
- Science with a concentration in Physics (Physical Science Major)
- For a chart showing all the required courses, including the names of the courses, see
the
advising sheet.
- For a diagrammatic sequence plan, see
Sequence Plan. This
chart shows which courses are prerequisites of later courses. It also recommends certain
general education courses that are especially helpful for future teachers.
- Science with a Concentration in Chemistry [Chemistry Major (Teaching Credential Only)]
- For a chart showing all the required courses, including the names of the courses, see
the
advising sheet.
- For the official sequence plan, go to
My Map, select the correct
catalog year, and select "chemistry (single subj tchg)."
- Science with a Concentration in Earth and Space Science
- The Department of Geological Sciences offers the
Emphasis in General Geology. If you wish
to add the subject matter certification, see the advising sheet,
which shows all the required courses, including the names of the courses.
- For a sequence plan for the Emphasis in General Geology, go to
My Map, select the correct
catalog year, and select "geological sciences." This provides a general plan for a generic geology
major. Meet with the single subject adviser to discuss how to best fit the core courses into the sequence.
- Note that the San Diego Unified School District has chosen to offer physics, chemistry,
and biology, not geoscience. Thus, the Science: Earth and Space Science certification is not proving to be
very useful in the San Diego region. Furthermore, in middle school, earth science is
a sixth grade topic, which frequently requires a multiple subject credential. If you
are interested in teaching geoscience, talk about strategies with the single subject adviser.
