An Announcement from SDSU President Stephen L. Weber

Mascot Referendum

I am writing to announce that on Wednesday, Dec. 3 through Friday, Dec. 5, San Diego State University will conduct a student referendum on a proposed new university mascot. The proposed mascot is intended to be consistent with the guidelines established by the Aztec Identity Task Force in May 2001. Since that time, through conversations with many groups and individuals and input from scholars on Aztec civilization, the mascot concept has evolved into the currently proposed version of the Aztec Warrior. A rendering and description of the proposed Aztec Warrior mascot will be posted on the SDSU Web site (www.sdsu.edu/mascot) at 6 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 17.

The December referendum will be conducted electronically using each

student's Web portal. In the next two weeks, information will be provided on how to cast your ballot.

A referendum of the SDSU Alumni Association and the Aztec Athletic

Foundation on the proposed Aztec Warrior mascot will also be conducted. If both the students and the combined membership of the Alumni Association and the Aztec Athletic Foundation endorse the proposal (each by a simple majority), SDSU will proceed to develop the Aztec Warrior mascot accordingly; if a majority of either the students or the combined membership of the SDSU Alumni Association and Aztec Athletic Foundation does not approve, then it will not be adopted as a university mascot, and the absence of an official university mascot will continue. At the time of the referendum, you will be asked to vote "yes" to approve the proposed Aztec Warrior mascot or "no" to reject the proposed Aztec Warrior mascot.

Results of the referendum will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 11.
