On October 11th, there will be a workshop entitled "Putting Courses On-line". Go to ctl.sdsu.edu to register and see a list of all upcoming workshops.
IT Security Update
- The ATI Steering Committee at the Chancellor's Office sent out several spreadsheets that have to be filled out regarding ATI for the Chancellor's Office. John is working on the web portion of these spreadsheets.
- Riny Ledgerwood has taken over the ATI duties previously handled by Carol Redding.
- The license for Zenworks Patch Management has been renewed. A memo to Deans and/or Associate Deans will be sent out from Ethan Singer about a wider implementation of Zenworks.
There is a 15-person task group that is working to update our Information Security Plan mobile devices standards. The standards are very consumer driven and the group is addressing complex and immature solutions for cloud computing, device management, application management, and various other security features. No dates for release of the standards have been set, but look for them to be included in the next revision of the SDSU Information Security Plan.
The iPhone robberies that have taken place on campus were discussed. Where the robberies started out as a "snatch and run", the scenarios have escalated into armed robberies. The thieves have been identified and 4 of the 6 thieves have now been arrested by SDSU Police. Felecia stated that iPhone robberies are a nationwide problem. There are kiosks at various malls where a person can put in an iPhone and get out cash. It is believed that this is the cause of the recent iPhone thefts.Software Updates
CNI Update
Dell is our current Large Area Reseller (LAR) of software. There will be a conference call with Dell on September 28th to discuss issues with software purchases. Celia has received many negative comments (and a few positive) regarding this issue. Dell has an in-house rep for Microsoft and Adobe, but there is none for 3rd party software such as Symantic and Crystal Reports. Dell only has one person to handle all 23 campuses. The RFP to find another LAR has been postponed. Dell was given another year before going out to bid to possibly find a new LAR. Send all comments on this topic to Celia at cchavez@mail.sdsu.edu.
Microsoft will be on campus October 24th from 10:30 - noon in LL-261. They will be discussing MS Windows Server 2012, SQL 2012 and Windows 8. Contact Celia Chavez if there is anything you would like Microsoft to address in the meeting.
- Kent McKelvey gave an update on the CNI project. TNS completed 261 locations and installed 400 new switches in 60 days. The only remaining part of the project is to switch over Public Safety and Human Resources, and to do clean up.
- SDSU no longer has a contract with Cisco. The new manufacturer for routing and switching is Alcatel-Lucent Technologies.
- The number of devices on the wireless network has grown tremendously. Last year at peak times, 7,000 simultaneous devices were on the network. This semester, at peak times, there are 17,000 devices on the network.
- There is a website "speedtest.sdsu.edu" that people can use to test the speed of the network.
- All users will have to re-register for wireless over winter break.
Next MWSSLS meeting will be October 18, 2012.
