Academic Affairs Update
Academic Affairs is in the process of renewing software licenses. Deep Freeze, Matlab, Minitab, and SPSS have all been approved for renewal.Free Computers
The Library was funded for new computers at the end of 09/10, therefore, will have several hundred used computers/keyboards available to other departments towards the end of summer. At least part of these computers will be Gateway SFF Pentium 4 (Model E-4300 4-Bay) and they have 512 MB of RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, 3.2x GHz of speed w/3-1/2 Floppy. If your department is interested in reserving quantities of these computers, please email Carol Phillips with your name, department, email, phone number and quantity needed.
In mid-August confirmation emails will be sent with pickup instructions.
Email Update
The email sub-committee is continuing to nail down the email and calendaring transition from Mirapoint to Google. Next week the committee will be meeting with Google. In a couple of weeks the committee will be meeting with Google. There are currently >50 email/calendar testers. If you want an account to be a tester, contact Connie English. Connie will be sending out an email requesting input from the testers. The Identity Management Program is a key factor in the migration as it cannot take place until the IDM program is completed. Currently, the previous vendors code is being assessed by a new vendor.
Training Resources
Microsoft IT Academy - Academic Affairs is looking into the possibility of purchasing a campus license for the MS IT Academy which is available to accredited academic institutions for IT training and Microsoft certification. Recent questions on IT resources: Awhile ago there was something that gave access to the O'Reilly books via Library access. Is that still in place? Was it just O'Reilly books? or did it include other publishers?According to SDSU Librarians, it was probably the Safari Tech Books Online database from the Library's electronic holdings. This includes books by a range of publishers. There are a couple of ways to get to it:
http://infodome.sdsu.edu/dbaz.php
or
http://infoguides.sdsu.edu/resourcelink.php?id=175
or
You can find these E-books in the Library's PAC by including "Safari Books Online (Series)" in the title field for your search criteria on the Locating Books page.
Security Plan
An email was sent out to let folks know that the proposed changes to the University Information Security Plan are now online for review and comments at http://security.sdsu.edu/policy/secplan/drafts/index.html. The bulk of the changes encompass PCI DSS compliance, grammar and wording, Red Flags Rule documentation, and reorganization of the appendices to the new IT Security web pages. Forward any comments or questions directly to Felecia Vlahos at iso@sdsu.edu.
Power Management Project
Carol Phillips is assisting LARC in the power management project. If any other departments want to join in the project for this cycle, contact Carol Phillips immediately.SSL Certificates
There is a new program called InCommon SSL Certificate program to obtain SSL Certificates. The project, which was announced on June 7th, will offer "unlimited server and personal certificates to U.S. colleges and universities." The CSU has bought into the program and the CO will provide the initial funding, so there should be no cost to SDSU for at least the first year. The program is currently testing with a small number of institutions this month with projected rollout to others "late summer". There are
currently no further details about availability or exactly how the program will work. Details will be announced as they become available. If you have a certificate that is expiring in the next 2-3 months, John Denune suggests that you purchase a replacement because it is not likely
that InCommon will be available within that timeframe. There are a limited number of Verisign SSL certificates available at:http://security.sdsu.edu/services/ssl/
Priority will be given to critical campus services and servers. Please let John Denune know if you have any questions.
Next meeting will be July 15, 2010.
