Meeting in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
Diana Osborn, ChairDisbanding of IACC/ITS Update
In our environment of limited resources and personnel, the decision to disband the IACC committee seemed appropriate. This action took place on September 8, 2009, with the understanding that the ITS and Academic Affairs updates would move to the MWSSLS agenda.
James Frazee announced that media on campus is being consolidated at the Media Center in the Library. The coming year will see the move of the ITS Media Catalog 8000 title holdings incorporated into the Library’s PAC and availability of these items extended to student use. Faculty now will need to checkout media for their classes, as ITS has ended the playback service to classrooms beginning this Fall. James is also working with Mark Figueroa from the Library on directions for streaming video.
Academic Affairs Update
John Ross noted the recent round of Foundstone scans and reminded all that they need to be done monthly. He also thanked everyone for their progress on the Security Plan during Spring 2009, but noted that everyone’s Milestone Plan Timeline needs to be updated regularly. The due date for the next update is September 28th. Milestone plans must be submitted to John regardless of progress.
This update is each group’s new baseline per Felecia Vlahos. With furloughs and other budget rationales, everyone needs to re-evaluate their timelines. If these or other reasons have delayed progress, put that in your comments. If you can not meet an item’s current Final Date, then line through the date and enter a new date below that one. If your milestone dates are affected by this change, just adjust them accordingly to meet the new Final Date without lining through their old dates or having a second date. Bottom line – The time is NOW to make adjustments as the CSU is expecting delays.

Software Licensing Update
Celia Chavez announced that a copy of Snow Leopard (10.6) is being handed to the IT Software Contact for departments who have paid for maintenance in their AMP contract. Please bring a blank Double Layer DVD, when picking up Snow Leopard. Ordering additional media information has not arrived as yet, but probably will be around $15 for each DVD.
Snow Leopard is for Intel based Macs only. It is compatible with Deep Freeze, but Virusscan may have issues. SPSS vers. 17 and lower will not work with this OS, vers. 18 due in November will work with Snow Leopard.
Also available to the IT Software Contact for departments is MS Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit and 64-bit media.
We are in the 90 day grace period for SAS. SDSU has the invoice and when the check reaches SAS, Celia can release the media. To get SAS going again, users will need to update the setint file.
MiniTab has a new license file.
Other IT Changes
It was announced that UCO has cut hours. Sunday hours are now 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Bob Newhouse will be retiring in November and Connie English is the our new liaison to the IT Managers committee.
TNS has lost three temporary staff due to non-renewal. This included Leo Mata, Christi Fakuda, and Will Smith.
IDM Update
Rich Pickett informed everyone that the IDM solution has been tested with a limited group and is working well. There have been no technical glitches, so they are expanding the test group to include UCO. The current plan is to roll IDM out to the Mail and Meeting Maker users later this fall.
The campus has an In Common Agreement for Shibboleth use. The Shibboleth System is a standards based, open source software package for web single sign-on across or within organizational boundaries. It allows sites to make informed authorization decisions for individual access of protected online resources in a privacy-preserving manner. Using Shibboleth-enabled access simplifies management of identity and permissions for organizations supporting users and applications. Shibboleth is developed in an open and participatory environment, is freely available, and is released under the Apache Software License. Progress with IDM is important for the coming CSUConnect Federation project, which supports a unified identity and access management infrastructure across the CSU System that enables authorized campus individuals to use their local campus digital identity credentials to gain access, as appropriate, to resources and services throughout the System through adherence to a common set of standards, identity attributes, data and data definitions, and identity management practices.
Email/Calendaring Update
The email/calendaring analysis is currently in progress. The campus will be talking to Google next week and looking for any possible technical hurdles. Rich mentioned the federal government has certified Google as secure. However, ATI and privacy issues are also being examined with Google.
Additional discussion items:
ROHAN Web Server News
- MarComm approves all bulk mail requests/deliveries.
- ROHAN allows bulk mail to be sent only by certain accounts and regular accounts are limited to a new sending rule of less than 200 an hour and less than 300 a day. This was recently done due to a rash of compromised accounts.
- A new email system will come out of Pickett’s budget.
- Jabber an instant messenger system for the campus is coming soon.
After two months of working on the fine-tuning, Ron Nash switched the ROHAN web services over to a modified proxy server option for static content on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. Using Apache 2.13, www-rohan.sdsu.edu now has a lightweight and a heavyweight side to its web serving. The heavyweight side handles the more complicated php requests, while the lightweight side serves up the shorter text-based requests. This division of labor allows the text-based requests to be served approximately 10 times faster. Default refresh on content is set at one hour, while images are set at one week. Folks who update their web pages can force a refresh of the web server content cache (and their browser) by forcing a reload on the page(s) updated. Most bowsers have this under View -> Reload.
ROHAN Streaming Media Server News
Ron Nash announced the planned move of Streaming Media services from the ROHAN server to the EOMER server for Spring 2010 semester use. This will happen one week prior to the Spring 2010 semester. The move solves the QuickTime streaming issues for off-campus users. The upload of files remains with ROHAN, as EOMER will just handle the serving of files. Ron noted that the rohansoft.html under Internet lists FTP software for this purpose. It was mention that faculty would like a page with easy steps for the upload process. Jim Julius stated he will look into this.Next meeting will be October 15, 2009.
