Kyle Murley, committee member, gave the attached report to MWSSLS. Bob Newhouse, committee chairman, asked that MWSSLS members send their comments to newhouse@mail.sdsu.edu for the next IT Managers Meeting in between December and January.SAS Update
It is suggested that version 9.2 be used to avoid problems. Celia Chavez has copies of this for checkout with necessary codes. Media consists of two DVDs.SPSS News
Version 17 will not be released until January to see if patches are released by then. Currently, there is a patch and a hot fix available for V16.AMP Report
Campus representatives are meeting with Apple today on pricing issues. Final negotiations must be completed before Snow Leopard releases around March or June.McAfee Antivirus/Antispyware Update
The campus has been renewing the McAfee contract in September, while it expires in December. However, the campus has not renewed yet this year. There are no updates for antispyware until the renewal takes place. Also there is no EPO Mac client for version 8.7. If we do not participate in the renewal, use of McAfee antispyware ends December 5th.Parallels/VMWare/Sun VirtualBox News
The System Administrators Meeting on December 12th will be reviewing the options of using Parallels/VMWare/Sun VirtualBox on the campus. Sun VirtualBox is free, VMWare is $39, and Parallels is $79. Possibility exists that Aztec Shops and Apple may reduce the price on Parallels.Log Management Committee Report
Currently log management is not being done and the campus is looking for a solution to encourage log monitoring. The committee's first meeting covered campus needs and product requirements, as well as enterprise and shareware choices being considered. There is a collaborative Excel document on Google Docs for the committee and access will be given to MWSSLS and System Administrators shortly.The committee's second meeting had discussion on Rich Pickett and John Denune's access to logs and the availability of incident help from them. The committee wants to cover responsibilities, best practices, and products with input from everyone in the IT areas. The next meeting may be December 19th.
Other Announcements
Reminder for everyone to review the CSU policies and standards posted at http://security.sdsu.edu/policy and send comments to IT Security Office. Note: The CSU version will eventually supercede the SDSU version, so our input is invaluable.The audit was successful and during the next six months, all departments will have a meeting with John Ross on their individual audit points. Plans are for a timeline to be posted on the security web site.
Meeting Maker's Notify Link is being setup and tested now for PDAs and Smart Phones. Be aware a chargeback will be incurred for the service.
Next meeting will be December 18, 2008.
