Meeting in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
Cyndi Chie, Acting ChairClassic Menu for Office 2007
Carol Phillips stated the Library is interested in obtaining an add-on program called Classic Menu for Office 2007. The Library wants to install it on the BATS classroom and SCC computers to lessen the workload at their student Help Desk. With the new version moving to ribbons/buttons, the concern is there will a lot of confusion for users of the BATS classroom and SCC computers. If a quantity of 4999 were purchased, the cost of each copy would be $2.95 (90% discount). More than 4999 would be considered a site license. The Library is interested in a minimum of 418 copies.Discussion ensued on whether this should be a site license for the campus. Several departments are not planning on supporting Office 2007, and others felt their users would adapt. The final decision was no site license would be pursued.
Training for Office 2007
Cyndi Chie mentioned there are web sites offering free training on the new interface for Office 2007:It was noted that Visio did not switch to ribbons/buttons in the 2007 version.
- http://movielibrary.lynda.com/html/modListing.asp?pid=230 Offers essential training on all of the Office products. The part of the training modules that cover the new interface are free.
- http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/getstarted/FX101923361033.aspx Offers basic training for the 2007 Microsoft Office system. Cyndi mentioned that low vision people may have a problem with these modules.
Office 2003 Student and Work-at-Home Media
Celia Chavez announced that Aztec Shops (as of 6/30/07) would only distribute Office 2007 media for home use and student use. However, they can sell off their inventory of Office 2003 media until it is gone. After Aztec Shops sells out of their 2003 inventory any use of Office 2003 at home must be controlled by campus IT according to Celia. Either campus IT must do the install on the home computer or provide a password protected one download only remote option from a server. It was noted that the Macintosh version 2008 will have the ribbons/buttons, but won't handle visual basic scripting. However the conversion between the 2007 and 2008 versions will be good.SDSU IT Security Plan - Vulnerability Management Program
Felecia Vlahos spoke about the release of the 3rd piece of the SDSU IT Security Plan - the Vulnerability Management Program (VMP). Malware, patches, and etc controls are in this piece, and it includes the need for encryptions in databases of confidential data and multiple SSN search tools. She stated there is a high probability that the 1st campus IT audit will be next year and will use the measures outlined in the VMP. The document is designed to bridge the gap between what the IT staff and IT managers are doing. Felecia asked everyone to share the document with other departmental staff, who deal with confidential data. It was noted that "MUST" items require any exceptions be updated in the document. Those items listed as "SHOULD" require any exceptions be documented in your departmental procedures.Calendar Committee
A 3-year contract has been awarded to Meeting Maker and a new version will be installed this Fall. Support for Notify link is included. Symbim will be available in Notify Link soon and SDSU will run the server. The IT Managers will determine costs and there will be a chargeback for Notify Link made to the departments of approximately $60 per user.Patch Management Update
An objective report based on cost has been forwarded to the IT Managers, but they will be asking for a subjective ranking by departments in writing by the testers. This was after a 4-month review of the products.EndNote
Apple Support Options
There is no pursuit of a site license at this time on campus or at the Chancellor's Office, but discussion is happening. Therefore there is no change to how this is being purchased by individual departments.
Tony Graham from Apple made a presentation on new Apple Support Options. Applecare is a consumer level support with regards to the operating system. For IT and departments that need deeper level support for the desktops and servers there has been a $5000 a year option with 10 enterprise level incidents. Now a new option is available for $2800 a year with 3 enterprise level incidents. Both of these options put you in touch with top-level experts and fast turn around on solutions. Tony also mentioned if the campus went with the $5000 option, SDSU could get a cheaper Applecare for the hardware components.Macromedia Requests from Auxiliaries
Celia announced that the software for the Macromedia requests has been distributed to the division representatives. Everyone needs to contact their department's representative to see what you are to receive.SPSS V15 Patch for Vista
SPSS V15 Patch for Vista is available.Final items
Email Diana if you are inquiring about the Parallels upgrades.Another review of anti-spyware has been put off for now.
Next meeting will be August 16, 2007 in AH-1120. License server for Assistive Technology was tabled until the next meeting.
