No update received.Warning on Firmware Update for Intel Macs
Celia Chavez stated that UCO recently tried a Firmware Update on an Intel MacBook and it failed. The computer no longer recognized the CD drive and they are having to send it back to Apple. However, another department did the update on an Intel iMac and it worked fine.VirusScan for Mactel V8
Diana announced that as of April 17th, the ~avir site on ROHAN has the VirusScan V8 for Intel Macs package for download. It is Intel only and is running under Rosetta. Please note, if you are thinking about running Windows on an Intel Mac, you are required to purchase a Windows License. Our MS Select agreement licenses are only upgrades to existing licenses and require the CPU to already have an installed MS OS.MS Select Reminder
January 1, 2006 was the beginning of our three year renewal of the MS Select Agreement. The packages covered are:
- Windows XP Pro w/SP2 (upgrade only)
- Office XP Pro for Windows
- Office Pro 2001 for the Mac OS 9
- Office Pro 2004 Mac w/Virtual PC for OS X
- Office Pro 2003 for Windows
- FrontPage 2003 for Windows
- Publisher 2003 for Windows
- Visual Studio.Net Pro 2003 for Windows
For Home Use, you must go to the bookstore with your RED ID and purchase the CD set. Home Use allows for 2 installs (Desktop and Laptop). Exceptions on quantities for Home Use need to go through Celia and everyone is NOT to burn more copies. Departments should be doing "Due Diligence" in making sure no extra copies are made or being installed on equipment outside of the agreement's language.
MS Windows Server is also part of the Agreement for existing use only. John Ross knows the number of these licenses and who is responsible for them. If a department is increasing their number of servers using MS Windows Server, then the department must purchase new licenses through ASAP Software Inc.
If you have questions about the MS Select Agreement, please email Celia Chavez.

SANS Securing Windows Conference
San Diego State University and SANS is delighted to sponsor a 6-day course on Securing Windows for University and Community College faculty, staff, auxiliaries, as well as state employees. This first west coast SANS .edu will be held on the SDSU campus August 11-16, 2006. A full SANS GIAC certificate is also available with this course. To register, go to sans.sdsu.edu. Any questions about the conference should be directed to sans@sdsu.edu but questions on funding should go to a person's department/college. Here's the current information on the funding per John Ross: Academic Affairs is providing $500 to each college to fund 1/2 the cost of one person's attendance at the conference. The selection of the person covered is done by the college. Last date to register is July 21, 2006
EndNote and RefWorks
EndNote and RefWorks are citation managers. Citation Managers allow you to create your own database of bibliographic references, to create links to sources and files, to manipulate this information inside MS Word, and to instantly change the format of the references to fit the needs.Marilyn Hall from the Library spoke about the need for a EndNote campus site license, as the use of this citation manager software has increased. She and other Librarians are supporting faculty and grad students (including research institutes) using EndNote in the Colleges of Business, Education, Engineering, Public Health, and Sciences to name a few. Marilyn noted that the library is receiving frequent requests for training. If we move to a campus site license, then we would like to coordinate the advertising and booking of training with BATS.
EndNote 9 is available for both the PC and Mac (OS X) computers, and comes with WriteNote, a web research and writing tool. For the PC, it is compatible with Microsoft Word 2000, XP and 2003 and works with other word processors that can save documents to Rich Text Format, including WordPerfect, StarOffice, OpenOffice, FrameMaker and more. For the Mac, It is compatible with Microsoft Word X through 2004 and works with RTF (Rich Text Format) files created by many word processors including OpenOffice, FrameMaker, AppleWorks and more.
The Library has recently purchased a one year (ends 7/1/2007) campus site license for RefWorks. This was prompted by undergraduate use in a particular course. RefWorks is a relatively new package, focused on undergraduate work, and works with Blackboard. A three year contract for EndNote would be a $20,000 per year commitment and should include WriteNote.
MWSSLS will be pursuing the site license.
Meeting Maker and Cold Fusion
Diana announced that upon Odum Ky's return on May 1st, his first assignment is to upgrade the Meeting Maker server.Celia will look into the availability of an upgrade to Cold Fustion MX 7 for Solaris, as it was not mentioned on the TRC web site.
Next MWSSLS meeting will be on May 18, 2006 at 10 a.m. in LL-430.
