Minimum Workstation and Software Site License Subcommittee Minutes

----------------------------------------------------------------------

January 20, 2005
Meeting in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
Diana Osborn, Chair

St. Bernard Status
Diana Osborn announced that most of the St. Bernard problems reported in the past were related to interaction with older leaf agent clients and the new console software. St. Bernard has been running for several weeks now without problems or the master server bombing. Diana said updates for the leaf and console agents can be found at http://rohan.sdsu.edu/~nwnt/. Please remember to NOT install the master agent in the preferences of the console agent.

Diana also announced that she has received assurance from St. Bernard's Technical Support team that they will be on site with us the next time we upgrade the servers.

Microsoft Update
Celia Chavez announced that the Microsoft Agreements covering the MS Office Suite and other products now include the auxiliary departments (Foundation, Associated Students, Aztec Shops, and the Campanile Foundation) as of January 2005. UCO will be meeting with the auxiliaries on January 25th to distribute the information. After discussion on the change, Diana suggested an additional information meeting for anyone interested later in February. Celia will pass the request along to Bob Newhouse. An announcement of the date and place in SDSU Universe for this additional meeting was recommended.

McAfee Renewed
Our campus licensing of McAfee was renewed and the new contract is between 12/29/04 and 12/30/06. Celia Chavez said it is a perpetual license and the campus will now just have to renew the yearly maintenance. The new contract includes 16 hours of training. This could be done in a 4 hour Train the Trainer option held 4 times, or in some other combination. After discussion, it was decided to create a sub-committee under the leadership of Peter Ryan. The sub-committee will decide on the shape and scope of the training, as well as what we want covered in the training (i.e. Epolicy Orchestrator, protection pilot, etc.). Please email Peter Ryan to join the sub-committee.

Celia noted that the Grant # will be given out on an as needed basis from her. The number is required to get Prime Tech Support. She also mentioned that the contract stipulates that SDSU will receive media once a year. As always, a CD swap is required to pickup software from Celia.

Students are included in the contract with the Student version expiring in 1 year. However, distribution mechanics for the Student version is still to be announced.

Other Software issues
It was noted that a new requirement of the Oracle contract is a signed End User Agreement. Celia also reminded everyone that no tangible goods are to be received by SDSU from Oracle unless you want your department to pay $250,000 in sales taxes.

SPSS version is now 13.0, while the SAS version is 9.1.3. Both are available through Celia Chavez.

Some discuss was held on the need for more coordination between the MWSSLS and UCO web pages concerning software. This will be explored and acted upon by the next meeting.

Xwin32 contract negotiations have culminated in a SDSU Unlimited Site License with upgrades and tech support included. James Frazee passed out an informational sheet to those present about the 3 year agreement (1/05 thru 1/08). While on campus access is tied to IP ranges, the contract does include 3,000 outside licenses. If your area is in need of these licenses, please have your software coordinator contact Darrell Irwin.

Workstation Minimum Specifications
Diana announced the forming of the new Workstation Minimum Specifications sub-committee. Anyone interested in working on the specs sub-committee should email Cyndi Chie.

Next MWSSLS meeting will be on February 17, 2005 at 10 a.m. in AH-1120.
