Meeting in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
Diana Osborn, ChairMcAfee Update
Celia Chavez announced that the McAfee Perpetual License Agreement is all paid and the media is available. You will need 4 blank CD-R's to cover the media exchange, when Technical Consultants come to her office for their departmental media. Also please bring them in individual sleeves, so they will be protected from damage. The CD's are for VirusScan V8.0i (work/home), McAfee EPO 3.5, Virex V6.2 for OS 9 (work/home) and Virex V7.2.1 for OS X (work/home).UCO is having discussions on a distribution site for students to pickup the above media. Students are included in the contract with the Student version expiring in 1 year. Students will also do a CD-R exchange (one for one) for the media. Aztec Shops has a single shrinkwrapped CD-R for 99 cents. UCO is also looking for a distribution site for faculty and staff to pickup media for their home use of McAfee.
Microsoft Contract Update
Celia Chavez stated that because the Microsoft Agreements covering SDSU Faculty and Staff for (WAH) Work and Home use of the MS Office Suite and other products now include the auxiliary departments (Foundation, Associated Students, Aztec Shops, and the Campanile Foundation) for Work and Home use as of January 2005, home use of the products will have a small fee. This is to reimburse the campus, since they have to buy the specific Work at Home media from ASAP Software, which cannot be duplicated. Negotiations are being pursued on a distribution site and fee amount, so this will be announced later.Celia said the suggestion made at the last meeting for an additional information meeting on the Microsoft contract, Site Licensing and the McAfee contract for anyone interested later has been approved. However, it is pending closure on the above negotiations. Celia noted that students can obtain media and licensing now for the covered Microsoft products at Aztec Shops for between $80 to $95 depending on the product.
CO Request and Software Survey
James Frazee relayed that the Chancellor's Office is looking into RedHat Linux usage around the CSU for a possible system-wide license agreement. This is what prompted their recent requst for information. James stated that Server Administrators need to look at the request. Merka said some of the terms used in the request need defining. James said the request does have terms defined and if they were not included in the request, then recipients may not have received all of the sheets in the email. James acknowledged that Jim Edwards had sent the request out to Server Administrators just yesterday, due to the Chancellor's Office; but they need responses back by the end of the day - Monday, Feb. 21st.Discussion ensued. One query - Why can't this be covered by our responses to the campus Software Survey we just did? The Chancellor's Office request has more questions that what was covered by David Oehl's database. The Chancellor's Office wants more than software answers and is thinking of providing System Manager training. Suggestion - Once the data is collected for this request, it should be incorporated into our database. Agreement was had on the sugggestion. Diana also mentioned that everyone should try to update their portion of the database regularly during the year and not just do it for the October survey. She stated that this would help with other requests for information, as snapshots of the database are taken at other times.
EPO Training Committee
Peter Ryan explained the EPO Training Committee's proposal:Peter said that Vince at GovPlace had provided a good outline plan for the training. Also, the classes may be repeated during an October 1st-15th and a January 1st-15th schedule.
- 4 Classes/2 sessions
- 1st session - March 15th-30th - Focusing on setup and management; Covering steps in ePO Installation Guide, ePO Management Guide, and the McAfee Anti-Virus 8 Guide.
- 2nd session - June 1st-15th - Focusing on new features; Special emphasis on Rogue Detection and System Compliance Profiler.
- 4 hour class (3 hour lab/1 hour lecture with Q/A or 2 hour lab/2 hour lecture with Q/A)
- Invite participants who are responsible for:
- Installation of ePO server
- Pushing agents out to the clients
- Configuration of McAfee software w/Install Designer
- Pushing out the McAfee software
- Configuration and tuning of ePO to support security objectives
- Provide appropriate reports about status of machines
- 20 participants per class
- All participants should already have installed EPO and have a few working system in their area.
- All participants should already have read the manuals.
- All participants should bring a laptop for on-line fixes to their own systems while Q/A going on.
Discussion ensued. Queries - How to we identify who should attend the training? and Are there more than 20 servers involved? Should this be "Train the Trainer"? What is the next step needed to make the training happen?
The BATS rooms are unavailable, so where will the training be done? If a room could be found, Diana said the participants should be able to throw an ad-hoc lab of computers together. Merka Phoenix commented that Extended Studies might have a room. Merka will check on this and coordinate with Peter. Once the room is identified, we will need to let TNS know of our plans, as there will be traffic on the campus network during the training.
Peter Ryan said "Identifying participants could be made easier if we had better information on who is who and their reporting structure". Suggestions were made to use the information from David Oehl's database and the consultant list on the web as a starting place. Carol Phillips pointed out that the consultant list is in need of updating and was brought up to John Ross in IACC prior to the change over to James Frazee. At that time, changes were requested to be sent to John, who was going to have Carol Tohsaku update the web. That seems to not have happened and the actual pages of old are not available on the web. Diana said she would bring this up with James.
Macromedia Order Web Page
Diana announced that the Chancellor's Office will be contracting out the maintenance of the Macromedia Order web page soon. This is so it can become a secure page.MWSSLS Web Site
Diana requested the MWSSLS web site be moved out from under the IACC account, since MWSSLS's connection is really with the NAC and not the IACC. Carol Phillips said this could be done by end of the week.New Horizons
New Horizons has contacted Diana to see if SDSU is interested in more training coupons. Please email Diana Osborn, if your department is interested.Minimum Workstation Committee
Diana stated that Cyndi Chie would have a report from the Minimum Workstation Committee at the next meeting. Carol Phillips asked who is handling the oversight verifying that orders are meeting the minimum specifications before they go to the vendor. Several orders have gone through that do NOT meet the specs. Diana thought it was Purchasing and will check on this for the next meeting.Next MWSSLS meeting will be on March 17, 2005 at 10 a.m. in AH-1120.
PLEASE NOTE: The statements found on the MWSSLS Home Page are for informational purposes only. While every effort is made to ensure that this information is up to date and accurate, official information can be found in the University publications.
