Meeting in ITS Experimental Classroom at 10 a.m.
Diana Osborn, Chair

Mail Announcement
Carol Redding made an announcement about Mail for Bob Newhouse. UCO is looking at using Mirapoint.com to run our current mail server (used for faculty and staff email accounts) and to do spam filtering. The mail.sdsu.edu system would be shortly migrating from a POP system run by UCO to an IMAP system run by Mirapoint. This will bring about improvements in virus protection for mail accounts. If you have any questions about this, please send email to the WorkReq account. Also, Riny Ledgerwood is planning an announcement soon.

Tiger Release
Tim Ryan and A.J. Alexis from Apple stopped in to announce the release of Tiger (OS X.4) on 4/29/05. All Apple products including the new OS can now be purchased through Aztec Shops. Tiger will retail for $125 or $69 for education. Because Aztec Shops receives Educational Institution Site pricing, the Apple Store web site is restricted to the SDSU Domain. This requires all remote users to have an SDSU IP. Tiger will be on a DVD, but customers can trade down to CDs according to Celia Chavez. Celia mentioned that CSU pricing for the media is pending for people on the AMP program (Apple Maintenance Program), so departments won't have their media for a couple of weeks. Price for media will be under $15 per set.  Any Department can put their Macs on the AMP program. Cost is $20 per year to stay current. Contact Celia Chavez for more information at 43712. It was also noted that the new OS would have a minimum mandatory requirement for 256MB of RAM; anything less is no good.

Minimum Workstation Status
Cyndi Chie is still working on the minimum workstation information, but should have the changes to Carol Phillips shortly. Donna Roelofsz stated that Procurement is no longer checking to see if the orders are meeting the standards. Instead, departments are responsible for their orders. Please remind your departments.

MS & McAfee Distribution
Celia Chavez recently gave presentations on the changes affecting Microsoft and McAfee software distributions on campus. She reminded everyone that Microsoft at Work CDs are NOT to be used on Home computers; only State/Foundation purchased computers. State/Foundation purchased computers go through their College IT staff to acquire the Microsoft software for their State/Foundation hardware.

The MS at Home CDs require qualified people to have a RedID, a Microsoft form completed and signed, and the monetary payment for Aztec Shops. NOT qualified but may have RedID are retired Staff, Emeritus Faculty, and Adjunct Faculty. Adjunct designation means the individual is a volunteer - NOT a paid employee. Emeritus Faculty that are doing work for the University can obtain an exception to the rule, if they can provide a letter from their department chair stating the scope of the work.

McAfee at Home for students can be picked up at the SCC by showing their RedID. Faculty/Staff will need a Blank CD and their RedID when they go to the TNS Help Desk to obtain their copy of McAfee at Home. Celia will provide the Powerpoint slides of her presentation on the changes to Carol Phillips for inclusion on the MWSSLS site shortly.

EPO Training
Diana announced that the recent EPO Training went well and the trainer will return on 6/2/05 for part 2.

Adobe/Macromedia Merger
Diana stated that we don't know what changes will happen after Adobe acquires Macromedia. Currently, ASAP is our Adobe reseller, but the Chancellor's Office is currently changing the ordering procedures for Macromedia. They now are going through http://esite.shoptrc.com/ for the ordering process. May have more information on this at a future meeting.

SPSS
Discussion was had on the different SPSS versions & platforms. Mac 11.0.3 is much better, as it runs quicker. It will include the instructions for dragging down the license renewal form into the SPSS folder with the CDs. PC version 13 requires the computer system to be on a network during installation for registration. It was NOT recommended for use in a lab, as it requires you to visit each machine. Also, this version may only have patched bugs found in version 12, but no feature provides any significant improvement over version 11.

Next MWSSLS meeting will be on May 19, 2005 at 10 a.m. in AH-1120.
