Minimum Workstation and Software Site License Subcommittee Minutes

----------------------------------------------------------------------

September 16, 2004
Meeting in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
Diana Osborn, Chair

Spyware
Darrell Irwin mentioned that McAfee's new version has spyware included, so the need to continue looking at another product may be mute. However, user education will be needed on any product so the right settings are used. For instance, the TeaTimer part of Spybot that protects the registry has to be set for each user account on Windows XP. Darrell said they now have a trial version of Pest Patrol to test.

Diana said an Enterprise product with central administration options is the priority criteria and reminded everyone that AdAware is not free to the University, but Spybot is.

Software Survey
David Oehl asked that kudos be given to those areas that have put in their software data. October is our official reporting month and everyone should have their data in by the end of October.

McAfee
Celia announced that there had been no change in negotiations, as most everyone involved was either on Sick Leave, Vacation, or Maternity Leave. Version 8 is being deployed. Peter Ryan recommends use of Protection Pilot (an extra download), if you are going to customize McAfee settings. Wayne Ridge stated that updates from ROHAN are coming up with errors. This may be coming from a mirror site, or due to a missing file or missing tilde in the path. Diana will check the site and touch base with Ron Nash to resolve the problem.

Next MWSSLS meeting will be on October 21, 2004 at 10 a.m. in AH-1120.
