Minimum Workstation and Software Site License Subcommittee Minutes

October 21, 2004
Meeting in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
Diana Osborn, Chair

St. Bernard
Diana will be testing an updated release of St. Bernard this afternoon. She is hoping to put out an email this afternoon with the results.

McAfee
A decision needs to be made on using the at home Virus Scan Security Suite or the Home Use license for McAfee. The license for at home Virus Scan Security Suite (VSS) is $10 per person, while the the Home Use license for McAfee is $2.40 for 2 years. They are 2 different products. Some people would like to use VSS on their home computers. It makes it easier to support. If we go with VSS for home use it will cost more. If people really need the McAfee VirusScan Security version for home use vs regular Home use version, we could possibly charge back the departments for it to recover the cost difference.

St. Bernard cannot add machines to a pre-defined set of policies. Peter Ryan suggested that EPolicy Orchestrator (EPO), and Protection Pilot are able to handle this. Celia also mentioned that we should purchase a few copies of Active Virus Defense Suite, because it has "GroupShield" on it for those with Exchange Servers. Diana suggested doing further research on these products. Diana will send out an email to the lists requesting users to respond to Celia regarding the need for EPO. She also needs to know who has Exchange Servers and who are actually using them. We will have to audit those Exchange Servers to see which ones actually need GroupShield so that we do not purchase any more licenses than what we need.

Software Survey
The major departments that have not returned information via the software survey include Arts and Letters, Health & Human Services, and Sciences.

Additional Software
Celia announced that she has SAS, version 9.1.3 for release. This is a windows version, with easy installation. Statisticians are still testing functionality.

SPSS 11.5 is the version being distributed for SPSS. Celia has Version 12 available but only distributes it by specific request only. It is extremely buggy. Version 13 should be out in late Spring.

Students can purchase MS Office for $95 for Windows and $90 for Mac from Aztec Shops.

Minitab is now a Chancellor's Office license. The current license code will work through July. Diana has a new code that will extend the license through August. Minitab renewals will now go through the Chancellor's Office.

When Celia gets the CSI number for Oracle she will put the numbers globally into everyone's metalink account.

Kerio Firewall
Barry mentioned that the Library is testing out Kerio Firewall and will be implementing it on user machines who often login as "root". He suggested this might be a beneficial site license purchase for the campus. He will research the pricing information.

Next MWSSLS meeting will be on November 18, 2004 at 10 a.m. in AH-1120.
