Minimum Workstation and Software Site License Subcommittee Minutes

----------------------------------------------------------------------

November 18, 2004
Meeting in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
Diana Osborn, Chair

Spyware
According to Darrell Irwin, spyware is a moving target as vendors come and go with their offerings, mergers, or are bought out. It was announced that Pest Patrol Unlimited for the campus would cost $70,000. The cost plus the fact that the company was bought out has tabled it. Peter Ryan stated the Protection Pilot tests were working. Diana Osborn mentioned the McAfee 8, AdAware and Spybot tests were mixed, as none of the products catch everything. Best coverage is using several products. The recommendation from the Spyware committee is that Spybot continue to be used but that AdAware should be considered for campus site license. The committee also recognized a need for education on why and how this software should be used. Suggestions raised were having appropriate handouts at the SCC and possibly having BATS do a workshop. Jim Edwards said he had asked Felecia Vlahos for some training, but had not received a response as yet. Cyndi Chie mentioned that Felecia has been focused on the mandated policies and documents, but believes training is still a possibility. The Spyware committee will continue to meet and evaluate these types of software.

Kerio Personal Firewall
John Denune has requested that the discussion of Kerio firewall be moved to the Security committee rather than the MWSSLS committee before purchase or implementation, so the ITSO can be the ones driving the recommendation according to Diana Osborn. The request was made because of the feeling of the ITSO that anything that related to campus security should be discussed in the Security meetings, then filtered to other groups as needed.

Discussion ensued. It was felt that if ITSO was the driving force, that MWSSLS representatives need to be on the the committee to cover the practical issues of purchase and implementation. Also mentioned was the fact that security as a whole has changed. It used to be protecting perimeters was all there was. Now that's changed because of the lack of perimeters by virtue of PDAs, wireless, thumbdrives, etc.

Felecia (arrived late) stated that MWSSLS members should attend the NAC meetings to help develop security plans. Felecia said the MWSSLS mailing list will be used to invite the members to the next NAC meeting. She stated that situations for host based security do and can exist. Felecia said that SDSU is currrently under review by the Federal SEC over our recent security incidents. The Incident Responce Plan will be debuted at a future NAC Security meeting.

Miscellaneous
It was noted that John Denune still manages the listserves

McAfee numbers are still needed from the College of Arts & Letters (Eric Logan) for the campus negotiations.

Also noted - Contribute is the only software we have for content management.

The SDSU Styleguide committee is gone and replaced with a Web committee that has Cabinet authority. It is belived that Javier Gudino is the one in charge of this committee.

A WinX32 purchase brought up by Engineering is being explored. AA may get a campus unlimited site license for $3500 and it would be unrestricted by IP.

Next MWSSLS meeting will be on December 16, 2004 at 10 a.m. in AH-1120.
