Minimum Workstation and Software Site License Subcommittee Minutes

June 17, 2004
Meeting in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
Diana Osborn, Chair

McAfee Update
McAfee Version 4.5.x.x is no longer supported by NAI and when trying to update the dat files, it can actual break. Version 7.0 is still supported though. The campus is still getting pricing for antivirus software from other vendors as well as NAI. In the quotes we are asking for perpetual contracts and to include licensing for the students' computers as well. The home version of McAfee will no longer install, in fact it may no longer be able to update the dat files, as the home version's license has expired.

There was some discussion about the mail server being managed by UCO now.

St. Bernard update
Diana Osborn is coordinating the roll out of St. Bernard. It is working and is already in place in some areas. Contact Diana for more information and to schedule a time she can work with you to roll it out in your area.

Software Survey update
David Oehl said the data collection for the Campus' software survey is ongoing. A few people have already entered data for their areas. In October there will be a snapshot of the survey to estimate the numbers for upcoming software license renewals. If you haven't already done so, log in and enter the data for your area.

Spybot
Most all of the recent security instances on this Campus, have revealed that adware was present on the compromised boxes. Spyware has been attracting attention primarily because of the risk of identity theft and subsequent online fraud. The spyware issue has become so prominent that the Campus must address this issue immediately, to assist in improving our data security. Some sort of anti-spyware software should be installed on all computers.

The committee had assessed spyware software a while back. Ad-aware and Spybot were looked at then. At the time the committee was recommending using Spybot as it can be downloaded legally, for free. Ad-aware must be purchased. Many areas are already using Spybot, which is fairly good and better than using nothing. But the committee has decided to go back and look at other anti-spyware software, with the consideration that the Campus needs to look at getting a site licence.

Darrell Irwin has volunteered to form a sub-committee to evaluate anti-spyware software. Please contact Darrell (44274), if you are interested in participating in this evaluation. Pest Patrol, which can be centralized, and Integrity are two of the recommended packages for the sub-committee to evaluate.
