August 19, 2004
Meeting in LL-431 at 10 a.m.
Diana Osborn, Chair

McAfee
Diana Osborn announced the McAfee Ver. 4.5.x thru 7.0 should be removed from all systems as these versions are either broken or not supported by the vendor. Jim Edwards said he saw something announcing a patch for XP SP2 to fix McAfee VirusScan 4.x-7.0.

Celia Chavez asked if anyone has logged into the McAfee webcasts. She did for a recent one and reminded everyone to register a couple of days before the webcast. The time is needed for password transmission and the your setup of your computer. August 24th and 25th are the next dates.

Celia and a committee are working on negoiations for Group Shield, an extra product that scans email, in the McAfee license. John Ross and Diana Osborn are representing Academic Affairs on the committee. Kevin Carter and Joel Avendano will be joining the committee at the next meeting to represent their areas' licenses. The committee is also looking at EPolicy Orchestrater and VirusScan for Home (faculty/staff use only) during the negotiations.

Celia asked that those running MS Exchange servers let her know how these servers are protected. This information will allow the university to just purchase the number of Group Shield licensing that is needed. Affected department should contact Celia.

St. Bernard
Diana Osborn is going on vacation August 25th to September 15th. If you want to roll out St. Bernard in your area, please work around those dates. Diana is the sole source for the required account access and startup training (1-1/2 hours).

Diana said there are issues with the St. Bernard agent and ghosting images. She is awaiting a responce from the vendor now.

Spyware Committee Update
Not a lot of progress has been made by the committee according to Cyndi Chie. The committee is trying to do 60-90 day trials of the possible enterprise products and are in need of volunteers. Joel Avendano volunteered to assist. If anyone is interested in helping with the testing, please contact Darrell Irwin (44274).

Discussion ensued on several products: Pest Patrol, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, etc. Jim Edwards mentioned that http://spywareinfo.com was an excellent source of information. He also reminded everyone that with a blank CD in hand, they could get a copy of his Security CD (mentioned at the last IACC meeting) from him at the Faculty Room.

Software Survey
David Oehl said the data collection for the Campus' software survey is ongoing. Please logon and use the survey. Due to the negoiations with McAfee, all departments are being urged to at least enter their McAfee information now.

October 1st is our deadline for everyone's full report on their software. There will be a snapshot of the survey reported to the campus at that time to estimate the numbers for upcoming software license renewals. David will be designing the reports starting this weekend.

Next MWSSLS meeting will be on September 16, 2004 at 10 a.m. in AH-1120.
