Meeting in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
Diana Osborn, ChairSafari
Laura Hudson detailed an online searchable text service of current and some older O'Reilly, Addison-Wesley, Adobe Press, Cisco Press, New Riders, Prentice Hall, Peachpit Press, QUE, Sams, and Microsoft Press titles. The service known as Safari Tech Books Online allows books to be swapped out for new titles monthly. However, the Chancellor's Office has negotiated a system-wide deal for 317 current O'Reilly titles. Pricing for the service is based on number of books and simultaneous user ports. Average cost is $35/book.The O'Reilly deal is ~$9000/year. The Library won't be able to subscibe on its own, but may be able to help with a campus subscription. If support can be found at SDSU for the O'Reilly deal, the deadline to join is April 18. A title list for this offer is available at http://www.calstate.edu/SEIR/IP_Access/OREILLY_Ttis_PubDates_3-5-03.xls .
Since the deadline for the O'Reilly deal is upon us and a majority of hands indicated a desire for an SDSU deal, Laura Hudson will try to get the sales representative for the product to come out and give a talk at the next IACC meeting or between that meeting and the next MWSSLS meeting.
Calendar Committee
Calendar Committee is looking at the plus and minus features of the Novell Groupwise, Oracle Consolidation Suite, and Microsoft Exchange products. All of them have a web client. It was noted that Microsoft and Novell would be covered by the appropriate current contracts. Meeting Maker also wants to present their product.XP/Jaguar/NT 2000 to 2003/Turnitin Training
Steve Voelker announced that he only had 12 people interested in the Blue Star Learning offer, but that 5 more were added to the list as of this morning. Even though that is short of the required 20, Blue Star Learning has indicated a willingness to proceed with the class. They need us to decide on dates that will need to be publized. Discussion ensued as the class would need to find a date that accommodated the BATS classroom.Carol Phillips spoke about an alternative/refresher to the Blue Star Learning class. MacAcademy/WindowsAcademy offers CD-ROM training. She has attended their workshops and has used their video tapes in the past, and found both to be excellent. She just used the Mac OS X.1.5 four CD-ROM training set at ITS. Carol found that each CD consisted of approximately 2 hours of training with a quiz at the end to re-enforce the learning. The following are items of note about the features:
- A rapid search Index allows the viewer to go quickly to any topic on the CD just by clicking on a keyword.
- The viewer can watch a segment and pause the CD to work on acutal files in the background, then resume the CD at any time.
- The Quiz questions are random and consist of multiple choice true/false statements
- The Quiz allows the viewer to test their knowledge and print a custom certificate with their final score.
MacAcademy/WindowsAcademy offers Multi-User Licenses. These are nontransferable licenses that permits the purchaser to install the training content and train a maximum of 20 individuals at one location. With this license the product may be installed on individual workstations, or accessed from a server. Carol commented that the Library would be willing to host the CD's on a server.
The vendor currently has CD-ROM training available for both Mac OS X (Jaguar 10.2) and Windows XP.
- Mac OS X (Jaguar 10.2), 4 CD Volumes - $590 (Multi-User License per their web site)
- Windows XP, 6 CD Volumes - $885 (Multi-User License per their web site)
After discussion, Carol Phillips volunteered to explore this option further.
Carol Tohsaku is coordinating the MS NT2000 to 2003 Server training that will be offered free. Microsoft would be supplying T-shirts, Technet CDs, and refreshments. The 2-day training in June or July would not be hands-on, but could be held on campus or at UTC (preference would be ours). A show of hands indicated that on campus would be the preferred location. If you and/or your department are interested in the training, please email Carol Tohsaku.
Carol Tohsaku mentioned the need to advertise with our faculty the April 22nd and 30th Turnitin workshops. Technical staff can attend these, but the workshops will focus on the faculty needs. The Technical staff in attendance for the April 15th workshop gave the presenters a critique afterwards. The presenters found the comments very useful. To assist with the next workshops, Cyndi Chie will be sending Shari Shelton some examples from her recent use of Turnitin for a class Cyndi is teaching.
MS Server
Celia reviewed with everyone the survey of servers on campus. Departments reported on their Windows servers and the information was sent to the Chancellor's Office. As a result, we have been allocated $28,000 each year for three years for server licenses on this campus. The money this time got divided by campus size. These funds can cover other types of servers (i.e. SQL, ISA, SMS, Exchange, etc.). This information has been distributed to Academic Affairs, Business Affairs, Student Affairs, and University Relations. Next week, these areas will report back once they have looked at future needs. The CDs for the server licenses will come from Celia, so departments don't have to purchase media.Macromedia
After repeating once again that the Macromedia contract was still being finalized, Diana said that people can still purchase the basic Macromedia products under the old agreement. People should contact Diana, if they need a server product or one of the new products (such as Contribute) that were not on the old agreement. They don't need to contact Diana to purchase the products that were on the old agreement (like DreamWeaver, Flash, Freehand or Fireworks). Diana asked that anyone trying to get a Macromedia order done should email her with the details. If we have a volume of orders, she may be able to get some movement through other channels.Next MWSSLS meeting will be May 15, 2003 in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
PLEASE NOTE: The statements found on the MWSSLS Home Page are for informational purposes only. While every effort is made to ensure that this information is up to date and accurate, official information can be found in the University publications.
