Turnitin Software

Citation Managers - Reference Manager, End Note, and Procite
Nothing new on Citation managers.

Standard Software Survey
Software survey sample forms were distributed. Form will be web based and passworded.

Calendar Software
Meeting Maker has spun off into it's own company, The CSU Chancellor's office is now coordinating the Meeting Maker license. There is question as to how this will affect the contract. Details on costs are not known at this time.

Power Archiver
Power Archiver is a powerful compression utility that lets you compress and decompress files. It supports many different compression formats including RAR, ACE, CAB and tar. Other features include support for self extracting and password protected zip archives. Power Archiver 6.11 Is the last "Free" version. All subsequent versions will have to be paid for. Educational pricing is available for the new version and purchase provides lifetime free upgrades, if it is determined that we need to upgrade.

SPAM
Emily is researching available SPAM programs and looking into a product called SPAM killer (no URL available as yet). Currently there are no SPAM eradicators running on any of the main mail servers. Several systems have programs running that insert {SPAM?} into the front of the subject line of emails that originate from known SPAM hosts or known open relays. The trouble with most is that legitimate messages can fit some of the criteria of SPAM. The campus has changed the access to our local listservs to subscribed members only may post. This has eliminated a large number of SPAM email that was being sent to those lists. Individuals can set filters in Eudora to filter on the {SPAM?} insertion in the subject line to automatically divert messages that have been tagged by the mail servers into a folder other than the inbox (including trash if desired).

Macromedia
The CSU has completed the contract for Macromedia products. Maintenance on Macromedia software can also be purchased on the web, at least it will be once it's implemented on Chancellor's site. If you have attempted purchase from Chancellor's website and haven't gotten it, it is because purchase authorization wasn't clear. They'll contact you. However, please note the Bookstore is cheaper for Cold Fusion and some other of the high-end Macromedia products. (Cold Fusion stuff is half the price of Chancellor's contract)

Former download procedure has changed to make reporting more clear. Check with Celia for details. Celia asks that, if you have trouble with contacting vendors (the ones that handle system wide software agreements like ASAP), she wants to know about it. This includes any trouble contacting people at the Bookstore.

Auxiliaries are to contact Steve Garcia at the Bookstore for software purchases under system wide contracts.

Next MWSSLS meeting will be June 20, 2002 in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
