McAfee Update
Meeting in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
Diana Osborn, Chair
Celia Chavez has argued successfully with our vendor for the Virex 7.x update that works for Mac OS X. It is now on ROHAN in the Program directory as a .gz type zip file. Diana Osborn will be doing testing to check for any corruption in the file, before releasing it. Celia may get a number of the Virex 7.x update media shortly. The ROHAN web page for the McAfee updates has been updated recently and is much more user friendly. Everyone, except Diana and Ron Nash, has ReadOnly rights to everything on the web page. Diana was not sure if the current page allows for getting to the copy of Virex for OS X that she just put up there. ReadOnly rights are there for everything with program in it, however access out of the web page may not include the directory she put Virex for OS X into. Currently, the Mac OS 9 users can do an auto-update from the web page, but the configuration page presents all information in a readable format, including the password. The current setup, both pc and mac, send in clear text, typical of ftp. Ron is looking into this for possible alternatives.
Bob Hart mentioned that while the ROHAN web page is set to pull from McAfee around 5-6 a.m., it was not correct last week. However, he checked this morning and it was correct. Diana asked everyone to email her, if anyone has this happen to him or her. She and Ron are working on this with McAfee and need to track the problem. Everyone's assistance is appreciated.
Smartforce CBT Update
It is official - The Smartforce CBT contract has expired and will not be renewed by either CSU or SDSU.Standard Software
Because many users of the CBTs and their departments did not make themselves known to MWSSLS until after the contract expired, it definitely is apparent that information needs to be shared both directions. It is the responsibility of MWSSLS to share and publish information about the software packages being used by the campus. However, fulfilling that responsibility is based on information provided by MWSSLS members. In an effort to increase MWSSLS's knowledge of what software packages each department considers to be their standard set of software packages, Diana and Cyndi Chie will be sending out a survey to MWSSLS members. From the survey responses, they will compile a list of standard software by department that will help MWSSLS do a better job deciding which software to make a campus standard in the future. Once done, the list will require yearly (or by semester) updating by MWSSLS members
Mac OS Training
Carol Phillips announced the current status of a proposed Mac OS 9.x, 10.x, and 10.x Server Training. She, Carol Tohsaku, and Jim Edwards met with Tim Ryan and Tony Graham from Apple last month. From that meeting, we are trying to develop topics for customized training sessions by Tony for SDSU IT Staff possibily during Spring Break. This was also announced at the recent IACC meeting. It was agreed by those present that Carol would send the same mailing out to the MWSSLS mail list to give the request for information a wider audience.MiniTab
Diana distributed information from MiniTab about their rental program for students. They are offering a copy of MiniTab for use by the semester at $29.95. Please pass this information onto your faculty, who are using or thinking of using the product in their classes.Reference Manager, End Note, and Procite
Librarian, Marilyn Hall, provided a brief introduction and summary of the three citation manager programs (Reference Manager, End Note, and Procite) that MWSSLS is considering for a possible site license. The vendor has incorporated into their new versions many features from another product called Bookwhere. For additional information, view the summary.Diana mentioned that she has had trouble reaching Aztec Shops about these packages and is still trying. To gage interest, MWSSLS members were asked to send Email to her stating the number of copies of each package their department would be interested in purchasing.
Marilyn agreed to attend the February meeting of IACC and provide the same information to that audience. She will also do a presentation on the software in LA-76 later.
Plagiarism
Librarian, Marilyn Hall, provided selected resources for avoiding Plagiarism, as well as websites on discussing plagiarism for students, tips for professors, and paper mills. For additional information, view the resources. Diana promised pricing information at the next MWSSLS meeting.Evaluation Committees
Bob Hart reminded the MWSSLS members present that we should be making plans to start early on evaluating alternative virus software before the license renewal comes up for McAfee. Bob will send out a message at some point to the list requesting members for the committee. He will coordinate the first meeting for the election of a chair who will report back to MWSSLS. Diana mentioned that we might reactivate the previous committee for this. She also talked about the possibility of reactivating the Calendar committee to look into alternatives for Meeting Maker and will need to check with TNS about their plans.Next MWSSLS meeting will be February 21, 2001 in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
