Minimum Workstation and Software Site License Subcommittee Minutes

----------------------------------------------------------------------

March 22, 2001
Meeting in LL-431 at 10 a.m.
Diana Osborn, Chair

McAfee Update
The data file updates are now housed on campus on the server rohan. Celia Chavez sent the connection information to the data coordinators she had on file. If you didn't receive information and think that you should have contact Celia. Program updates are still being worked on for local distribution. Current updates on rohan are weekly just after the official update time at McAfee. It was suggested that this should be more often since a cursory record of available updates shows that McAfee has actually updated more often. This will be looked into.

Diskkeeper
Information on contact, number of copies (separate numbers for workstation and server), account number, signor on the account and mail code need to be emailed to Diana Osborn, diana@sciences.sdsu.edu, by March 29, 2001 so that a joint PO can be set up to purchase. Current pricing is $13.11 per workstation copy and $89.70 per server copy.

Xwin32
Information on current copies on campus for discount have been compiled. Company contact will be made to finalize the numbers.

ScheduleOnline
It was decided that this topic should be moved to a subcommittee for further discussion. Contact Diana Osborn, diana@sciences.sdsu.edu, if you are interested in being on the committee. The committee will look at the issues and concerns with the current scheduling program, Meeting Maker, and compare with other alternatives. The committee is open to suggestions for additional programs to evaluate. Volunteered to be on the committee: James Frazee & Jim Edwards from ITS. Recommended for the committee: Constance Rhea and Odom Ky.

MINITAB
Request was made to find out the use/need for MINITAB in other departments on campus. There currently is a license for 15 users on SUN (housed on rohan) and 55 users on Windows platform, 11 of which are dedicated in a Math lab in BAM, the rest are on stations in the student computer lab. The question is whether there is a need to up the number of licenses. Cost is $150 per 10 licenses.

DBMS/COPY
A request was made about the upgrade of DBMS/COPY from version 6 to the more current version 7. It was not known where the copies had originated from. It was suggested at the meeting that perhaps Susan Mar or Barry Dworak would have the answer to this. They will be contacted for more information.

Adobe Acrobat
Another request on the possibility of site licensing of Adobe Acrobat was brought up. Currently a volume license is available on Wareforce (however see item 8 below). The volume licensing requires the purchase of 20 points (20 copies) to receive the pricing listed. $48 per license, $25 for media. Pricing on possible site licensing has been requested from Adobe.

Wareforce
As of 3/20/01 it appears that Wareforce is no longer accepting orders for Microsoft Select products. It is unclear at this point if any of the other programs Wareforce has been providing have been affected. (Filemaker, Adobe, Symantec, etc). Celia is trying to obtain definitive information and will provide that to the committee as soon as she recieves it. A company called ASAP out of Chicago, Illinois is listed on the CSU pages where Wareforce had been. Celia has contacted ASAP and they seem to be aware that they are dealing with the CSU, but nothing official has come from the Chancellor's office. See also Microsoft Select for additional information.

TNS Hardware Support
It was announced that as of July 1, 2001, TNS hardware will no longer exist. Funding issues were mentioned as the main reason. TNS will accept hardware repair requests until June 1, possibly June 15. After that time only workorders already in will be serviced to complete all by the July 1 deadline. TNS is looking into the possibility of a drop off/pick up point for Apple service and suport. They will be meeting with Apple next week. They are looking for suggestions for companies to recommend for printer service and support. Also recommendations for companies to service and support PCs are being requested. Contact Kent McKelvey or Riny Ledgerwood if you have recommendations.

Next MWSSLS meeting will be April 19, 2001 in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
