Minimum Workstation and Software Site License Subcommittee Minutes

----------------------------------------------------------------------

January 18, 2001
Meeting in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
Diana Osborn, Chair

McAfee Update
The data file updates will be housed on campus on the server rohan. More info will be provided as the details are worked out. Do not install the current corporate version 4.5 on ME. Contact Celia for the release version that will work with ME. The bookstore will carry the media, details still need to be worked out (probable cost is $4.99).

Apple
Mac OS 9.1 is released, upgrade is free from version 9.04. Celia will be receiving the media. It is also available for download, get the url from Celia. The current licensing covers 1200 machines bought by 6/30/00. The license was allowed to expire with OS X not being available yet. It is not clear if the license will be renegotiated.

Diskkeeper
A draft of the request is in Susan Mar's hands.

Personal Firewalls
Review is continuing on personal firewalls. Black Ice has been dropped from our reviews. It is low on the list when compared to other packages. Focus will be on Zone Alarm and Symantec's product if we can get a review copy of it. Other products will be considered.

Don McKee has been reviewing Hackershield, so far looks ok. To do cover security properly a combination of personal with scanning will be best. Pentasafe had contacted John Denune, problem with the product is the need for people with expertise to use it.

Of note, John Denune reported that we are part of the city schools security contract and as part of their upgrades we will get a security audit. A meeting with SAIC is scheduled to see what this entails.

Question about hardware solutions, ex: Linksys. There are some limitations that would require more expensive equipment to solve. TNS is worried that these may cause problems especially with units that can set up DHCP and DNS information. If incorrectly set can cause campus problems. TNS should always be contacted before installation of equipment or software such as this.

Backup Software
No one available to report on this.

Secure ftp/telnet
Neither Stephen Treger and Barry Dworak were at the meeting to provide update on the possibility of scripting secure access via TeraTerm.

Xwin32
Don McKee reported that we have been contacted by the company that makes Xwin32 about site licensing since the campus already has 200+ licenses. They have offered to prorate based on purchases made within the last 6 months. Cost $2250 for the first year (includes the prorate) then $3250 annual renewal. Don will work with Celia on the details for this and represent the information at next meeting.

ScheduleOnline
Jim Edwards mentioned that his department was considering ScheduleOnline as a scheduling program with web enabled calendaring, conferencing, chats etc at 1/2 the cost of Meeting Maker. The company will create an import utility for import of Meeting Maker data. We can contact him for evaluation of the software. Or go to www.scheduleonline.com

Next MWSSLS meeting will be February 15, 2001 in AH-1120 at 10 a.m.
